October can feel like it’s bursting at the seams with things to do, especially with Halloween just around the corner. From all the Halloween parties and events (everyone’s birthday is somehow in October?!) popping up, personally, my bank account has been suffering. A student’s budget can only stretch so far, especially when you’re trying to pull off a killer costume for each event.
But don’t worry, I’ve got your back! To help you out, I’ve compiled a list of DIY Halloween costume ideas that are not only fun but totally affordable – you might even already have everything in your closet. Get ready to slay the spooky season without draining your bank account.
1. Wednesday Addams
I love Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams. She’s such a classic character, and the look is so iconic and easy to pull off. All you need is a black dress, some black knee-high socks, and black shoes. To complete the look, braid your hair into two low pigtails and practice your best deadpan expression. A nice finishing touch would be adding a white-collared shirt to layer underneath the dress!
2. Sims Character
This is one of the simplest costumes ever! To be a Sim, all you need is a paper or cardboard green diamond (plumbob) to attach to a headband or a wire so it hovers above your head. Pair this with any casual outfit, and voilà—you’re a Sim! If you want to accessorize to really sell the look, you can add a speech bubble with random Simlish phrases.
3. Rosie the Riveter
Strong, iconic, and easy to recreate. YOU CAN DO IT! For this costume, you’ll need a denim or blue work shirt, a red bandana, some overalls, a bold red lip, and a mean bicep pose. Not only is this a budget-friendly option, but it’s also empowering and instantly recognizable.
4. Barbie
I know it’s not 2023 anymore, but Barbie is timeless! You could do a lot with this depending on the type of Barbie you want to be, but if you’re aiming for the classic portrayal Margot Robbie does in the movie, think pink, pink, and more pink. A bright pink dress or jumpsuit, paired with some white accessories like chunky heels or sneakers, will nail the look. You can also add Barbie’s signature blonde hair; if you don’t have it naturally (Brunettes have more fun anyways!), a wig or styling your hair in big voluminous curls can capture the vibe.
5. Post Malone
Inspired by my sister, Post Malone is an iconic and effortless costume choice. To nail his signature look, all you really need is a flannel shirt buttoned all the way up, your hair styled in messy braids, and some temporary tattoos (or go DIY with a marker for his famous face tats). Don’t forget to add a scruffy beard (again, a marker works perfectly if you can’t grow one)! Throw on a gold chain, and you’ll drive the look home.
6. Farmer
A farmer costume is one of the easiest DIY options out there. Throw on a pair of overalls, a flannel shirt, and some cowboy boots and you’re all set. If you have access to some faux farm tools or a toy animal, it’ll make a cute addition to your look!
7. Cat
Sometimes, simplicity is key. Dressing as a cat is a classic Halloween go-to that’s super budget-friendly. All you need are some black clothes, a DIY tail, and a headband with cat ears. Use makeup to draw on a cute little nose and whiskers, and you’re good to go!
8. Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey has such a signature vibe that it’s easy to recreate for Halloween. Channel her 70s-inspired glam with a flowy dress, some big hair, and a flower crown. Don’t forget that sultry eyeliner and a soft dramatic lip combo.
9. Chappell Roan
If you’re looking for something bold and unconventional, Chappell Roan is the perfect inspiration. Known for her vibrant, colorful outfits and unapologetic style, she embraces fun, eclectic fashion with a pop star edge. To capture her look, grab your brightest, most eye-catching pieces (think neon colors, mismatched patterns, and plenty of glitter). Channel your Chappell and go all out with playful, over-the-top makeup to complete the ensemble. You can top off the look with her signature red curls to go the extra mile!
