The Dos, the Don’ts, and the How-Tos
I’ve been thrifting for most of my life. I love the thrill of receiving a compliment on something I’m wearing and responding, “Thanks, I thrifted it!” After years of thrifting, I’ve learned the tricks of the trade.

Finding where to shop can often be the most challenging step. You can choose large thrift store chains like Uptown Cheapskate, Plato’s Closet, and Buffalo Exchange, which are very selective about the clothes, shoes, and accessories they accept, meaning you might find better items. However, these places tend to be more expensive because they are curated.
Alternatively, you can visit places like the Goodwill Bins and charity shops, which accept almost everything and thus have lower prices. Some locations even let you pay per pound, meaning whatever you buy will be set at one low cost based on weight.
Lastly, your town may host large flea markets outdoors or in warehouses once a month or seasonally. These typically feature individual vendors who set their own prices. While you might find these prices to be high, most vendors will allow you to make an offer and negotiate a middle point.

Deciding your personal style can be difficult, but you don’t have to know exactly what you like to wear to find cute pieces.
When thrifting, the most important thing to remember is that it will take time. Most stores will not be perfectly curated to your style or have items that fit exactly within your price range. You have to dedicate time to sifting through racks, shelves, and bins. Not every item will be sized right or fit how you thought it would.
Take a friend, too. You will have a much easier time deciding if something is cute or just meh if you have a trusted friend with you (or at least on FaceTime).
Some things are almost impossible to find while thrifting, like jeans and swimsuits, especially if you are taller. I have found only one pair of jeans that fit perfectly ever in a thrift store. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible, though! With enough patience, you will be successful.
Lastly, you need to have a set plan.

Before thrifting, make a set of “rules” for yourself. For example, “I will spend less than $50, and I really want to find at least two going-out tops and maybe some tennis shoes.” Look at Pinterest and TikTok for outfit inspiration and see what you can create with the clothes you find. Plan to visit multiple stores in your area, and don’t be discouraged if you do not find much in one place because you never know what another might have.
Thrifting can be incredibly fun if you know what to do and how to execute it well. The reward is well worth the search. Don’t be afraid to try something new!
