Dolly Alderton is an English journalist, podcaster, and novelist based out of London. Her literary style, relatability, and devotion to her audience/readers inspire me. I am always on the lookout for her next project. I am a writer myself and look up to her because she possesses immense strength in herself and power in her words. If you are new to her, here are a few of her works that you should check out.
- The High Low
The High Low is her long-running podcast with journalist and essayist Pandora Sykes. My sister introduced me to the program after being an avid fan of their first podcast, the PanDolly Podcast. I loved the podcast for both its high and low brow news: balancing pop culture with informative perspectives on important cultural issues. My favorite aspects were Pandora and Dolly’s book recommendations and author specials. The High Low got me through much of high school and college; it was the perfect podcast for long walks and runs. Although the podcast ended in December 2021, I highly recommend going back and listening to old episodes. I still have not replaced the High Low shaped hole in my podcast library.
2. Everything I Know About Love
Everything I Know About Love is my favorite book of all time. I read this book after graduating high school in 2018, and it was just what I needed. Alderton’s beautiful honesty about love, loss, friendship, body image, and more spoke so deeply to me. The book is a perfect balance of memoir mixed with assorted humorous anecdotes. Everything I Know About Love had a semi-recent release in America, and I’ve been so excited to recommend it to all my friends. Alderton is developing the work for TV and I can’t wait.
3. Ghosts
Ghosts is Alderton’s first foray into a fiction novel. The plot was what I needed to read as a twenty-something navigating modern relationships. She knows how to write expertly crafted characters and relationships. In my writing, I love exploring the dynamics between people (not just love-interest wise but between family, friends, and strangers), and I see this reflected so well in Dolly’s writing.
4. Hopeless Romantic
This essay was printed in a small bound form for The Pound Project’s nonprofit. The essay discusses how she views the world from a dreamer’s perspective and strivers toward the romantic above all.
5. Love Stories with Dolly Alderton
I also listened to this mini-podcast while listening to The High Low. The podcast is a companion piece to her memoir. I love it for the way it tells a wide variety of notable writers, celebrities, singers, etc., experiences with love. We may all be in different stages of life, but at some point, we all experience the beauty and tragedy that is love.
Dolly Alderton is my favorite writer and I highly recommend that you read her work.
