I am the type of reader who loves books that give you the “heebie jeebies”. My last review was on a book called Rebecca which had its fair share of creepy moments, but V.C. Andrews’ My Sweet Audrina makes that book look like a children’s book. V.C. Andrews is well known for writing horror novels, her most well known is perhaps Flowers in the Attic. Her books aren’t scary in the way that Stephen King’s IT makes the reader unable to sleep, but they have a creepy quality that I love.
My Sweet Audrina is a story about a young girl living in the shadow of her older, dead sister. They share a name and a birthday, meaning she can never live up to the “first and best Audrina”. The first Audrina was everything a parent could want in a child, while the second questions her parents and isn’t as special as the first, according to her father. Audrina longs for her parent’s full affections, but can never seem to get past the ghost of her older sister.
This book is full of secrets and plot twists around every corner. The entire time that I was reading, I was trying to figure out what would happen next, but I was always surprised. This is definitely a great spring break or summer read. I would recommend to anyone who is into horror, but not quite as horrifying as a Stephen King novel. After reading this, I would also suggest reading her Flowers in the Attic series.
