I was 1 of 6 people from my high school to come to UT, 1 of 2 in the same college, and the only one in my major. So, believe me when I say I understand it can definitely be overwhelming to come to a new place without knowing many people.Â
An important aspect of UT’s culture played a huge role in helping me get out of my comfort zone and meet new people: football!Â
Knowing that even if we lost, there would be an opportunity to be surrounded by people who just want to have a good time was very reassuring. It sounds silly, but the end of college football season for a lot of people means one less opportunity to socialize and be part of something bigger than themselves. Community is such an essential part of college and football games definitely make you feel like you’re part of a community.
So what do we do now that football season is coming to a close?
For the Social Butterfly
The thing I love most about Austin is that something is always happening. From rooftop parties at parking garages to concerts at Stubb’s to two step at Maverick’s, if a good time with a lot of people is what you’re looking for, you’ll find it.
For the Football Fanatic
While college football may be nearing its end, the NFL is far from it! Swap out your burnt orange for some navy blue (go Cowboys lol) and host a watch party!
If you really love sports and really just want to spend time pursuing and spreading that passion (without necessarily being the next Quinn Ewers) another great option is to join an organization! One I’ve really been loving recently on campus is an organization called SCORE athletics. Through this org, UT Students visit schools once a week to teach and play flag football, basketball and soccer to kids in underserved communities.
For the the one that just wants to watch people tackle each other
Get some friends together and take a trip to Whitaker Field where Texas Women’s Rugby play year round!Â
