Good 4 Glossier: Why Glossier x Olivia Rodrigo is a Genius Collab

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Olivia Rodrigo being Glossier’s first-ever celebrity ambassador is definitely enough for me.

On April 19, Glossier announced the partnership with the songwriter. An undeniable it-girl, Olivia had just won three Grammys that month, begun her first-ever tour (also that month), and broke countless records with her debut album Sour. Seriously, does the girl ever sleep? She was clearly riding the high of newfound stardom, and Glossier jumped to join.

The Instagram video announcing the collaboration showcased a retro, slightly quirky side of Olivia, focused on their motto of “you look good.” Olivia looked gorgeous as always, with close-up shots showcasing skin texture and imperfections while the songwriter admitted,  “I always feel the best when I’m in makeup that I feel enhances what I have naturally.”

The video was paired with an “Olivia’s Favorites” section on their website, showing a few of her favorite makeup products from the brand. Olivia was also the face of their new lavender collection, a nod to her self-proclaimed signature color that Sour is painted with. Adorned with a  new lavender Balm DotCom, lavender hoodie, and lavender eyeliner, this collection was, in my opinion, to die for.

A few months later, they also released a VHS/ 70’s inspired video with Olivia promoting their No.1 pencil eyeliner. Again, the video showcased very natural, fun makeup looks and visuals.

Besides a few Instagram posts, nothing else really seemed to come from this collaboration.

Until just this week, when Olivia was in an iconic Glossier get ready with me video. Get ready with me’s are extremely popular among makeup lovers; Olivia’s calming voice and realness about blemish and eyeliner problems were clearly no exception, with the video getting over 150,000 views in 24 hours. Most importantly, Olivia’s get-ready with me was also an announcement for her own collection with Glossier, coming out October 25.

The collection is extremely Olivia-coded, with a mini, purple beauty bag featuring doodles such as her OR logo and a piano, a Olivia x Monochromes in Mist, a purple eyeshadow trio that Olivia notes will look great on brown eyes, and her very own Ultralip shade, Pisces.

Olivia’s nod to her zodiac sign is of no surprise to anyone, with her Instagram bio of “spicy Pisces;” she definitely lives up to the fish of the zodiac’s reputation of being gentle, romantic, and creative.

Olivia previously repped Glossier in her documentary with Disney+, Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u, and on various red carpets, including her iconic (even if it was barely on theme) Met Gala look. So, fans were not too surprised to see the two pairing up.

Olivia fits perfectly into Glossier’s target audience of 18-24 year olds, 75% female consumers. The collaboration is a no-brainer with Glossier’s idea of makeup as a creative outlet similar to fashion. Olivia is known for her iconic and ever-changing fashion decisions- from bare-faced girl next door one day to grunge-inspired rockstar-esque the next.

Glossier began in 2014 from founder Emily Weiss’ blog Into the Gloss on the basis of beauty as a facet of personal style. Glossier features beginner-friendly, no-makeup makeup products with something for everyone; whether you want sheer coverage, barely there skin tint, or a rainbow of eyeliners.

It’s important to note that Glossier has now been around for 8 years with no celebrity ambassadors. Choosing Olivia during the beginning of her ever-rising career is a tremendously smart decision, and having the collection be Sour purple-themed was a perfect tribute to the iconic album.

Olivia is the perfect embodiment of what Glossier represents: a very real girl who doesn’t shy away from experimenting with her looks. As a mega-fan of both, I can’t wait to see what else this collaboration brings us.
