Operation Staycation: Spring Break 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Spring Break is just around the corner, and I’m sure all of you are ready for a break! While many of you lucky ladies will be traveling to sandy beaches, many will also be staying in Austin. So if you will be staying behind, I say take advantage of the week and enjoy our beautiful city, because there is plenty to do!

South by Southwest

You don’t need a badge to enjoy SXSW. There are plenty of free shows and parties that only require an online RSVP, and lots even include free food and drinks. Auditorium Shores is one venue that holds free shows during the week, but make sure to get there early to grab a good spot. Sure it can get a little crazy, but that’s all part of the fun. And keep your eyes open; you never know what celebrity you might run into!

Rodeo Austin

If you want a little country (or maybe even a cowboy) in your life, Rodeo Austin will be sure to fulfill that wish with some great performances. Not a country fan? There are plenty of other things to enjoy like the delicious food, shopping, carnival rides, and of course, the actual rodeo.

Zilker Park/Barton Springs

Bring out your sense of outdoors and enjoy Zilker Park. Take a break from the treadmill and take a run around Town Lake instead. If you feel like getting in the water, go kayaking or canoeing. And of course, you can never go wrong with taking a dip into Barton Springs!

San Antonio

San Antonio may not be Austin, but it’s close enough so that you can make a day trip out of it. There is definitely plenty to do, like visiting Fiesta Texas and Sea World. Keep a lookout for great coupons online or in grocery stores to save some cash on tickets. If amusement parks aren’t your thing, take a stroll on the Riverwalk or get a little Texas history in and visit the Alamo.

Whatever you do, just enjoy this week. You’ve worked hard this semester, so take this week off and do as you please.
