Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is the debut film of the comedy trio “Please Don’t Destroy”, made up of Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy. They started out performing live sketch shows and are now making skits for Saturday Night Live. Streaming service Peacock added the movie last Friday.
I first heard about the trio through SNL. Their skit for the week was pretty distinct, bringing a fun energy that really works because of the trio’s dynamic. “Please Don’t Destroy” does prerecorded content for SNL, and they’ve embodied a quick, moving editing style that helps the already great jokes and silliness hit even harder.
I love their SNL stuff, so I was super excited for the movie, and I think it delivers. I’m definitely biased since I’m already a fan of their work, but I loved how the silly energy and editing style pretty much carries over from their skits into a feature-length film. The film also has other well-known comedians and is like a series of beats, each one peppered with jokes. Holistically, the movie really does slow down and weirdly transitions from the second to the third act, but if you look at it more as a series of skits as they go from place to place, it’s pretty entertaining.
So, their skills didn’t quite perfectly fit a movie style, but those little elements of their humor and style still shine through decently enough. I wish the storyline was a little more interesting (it’s a pretty classic adventure story) but I wasn’t disappointed. A fun little watch on the whole, and an exciting accomplishment for the “Please Don’t Destroy” team!
