The girls that get it, get it and this is truly one for my kind of people. It is finally under 90 degrees in Texas which only means one thing: binge watch Gilmore Girls and Taylor Swift.
Season 1: Fearless
To recap the pilot season, basically Rory gets into a very prestigious school that is expensive, so her rich grandparents pay her tuition under the stipulation that Rory and her mother have Friday night dinners with them (how painful). Rory also meets Dean, her first boyfriend, and she is annoyingly innocent.
This screams Fearless! Rory is literally just turning 16 and going to a new school in this season so “Fifteen” is her go-to anthem. Her first relationship is forever powered by “Fearless” and “Today was a Fairytale,” very cute giggly love songs. We also get a clear understanding of the mother daughter dynamic, so of course this season we dedicate “The Best Day” to Lorelai.
Season 2: RED
Disclaimer, this is when we get the crazy love triangle between Dean, the “good” and “perfect” first boyfriend (could not be farther than the truth) and Jess, the “bad boy” mysterious new guy in town. In this season Rory also goes to visit Harvard for the first time after Lorelai and her fiancé’s failed wedding, misses her mothers graduation to go to New York to see said bad boy, and kisses the same bad boy at Sookie’s wedding (while still dating Dean). That was a lot. Needless to say she really is “happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time.”
Starting off strong Jess gives off “I Knew You Were Trouble” energy because she gets into a lot of trouble, not only with her mom, but also her boyfriend for being so close to him giving his “Big Reputation” (get it?). The next song is “Girl at Home” but the roles reversed because Rory, you got a boy at home yet you’re flirting and kissing Jess. At this point in her life she also has a lot of pressure from school and college applications so she’s definitely relating to “The Lucky One” and “Nothing New” of course. After her failed relationship with Max (literally her daughter’s English teacher) Loreali and Rory grow even closer, so “Holy Ground” really captures their relationship at the moment.
Season 3: 1989
Yay graduation season! Rory is ready to go be a Yale girl after a rollercoaster mess of a relationship with Jess for various reasons. After all the ups and downs of Dean and Jess, Rory is ready to live her best life at Yale, very 1989.
Her crazy love life is truly giving off “Style” and “Out of the Woods.” Jess is a okay-ish boyfriend but he’s really absent, both physically (like he literally disappears) and emotionally he can’t open up to anyone. When he disappears and isn’t there for her at her graduation and she leaves him that message over the phone that really is a true life “All you had to do was stay” moment. Season 3 Rory and Lorelai are so excited for this next chapter of their lives, with college and opening an inn, so without a doubt “New Romantics” is fitting.
Season 4: Speak Now
This is the start of her downfall. At Yale, Rory and Paris are besties and life seems great. Except Dean gets married and HAS AN AFFAIR WITH RORY, this is when we get the mega-cringiest-gut-wrenching line “but he’s my Dean.”
I’m sorry Rory but this is very leave your wife for me “Speak Now,” very much “Better Than Revenge” but you love it because you’re actually relating to the lyrics instead of just enjoying it musically. In this stage of her life, she is definitely balling to “Last Kiss” after stalking his ceremony, and after getting together she is feeling “Ours” because of the judgment, while the other girl is blasting “Dear John.”
Season 5: Reputation
The downfall continues but it’s not that bad yet. Rory drops Dean after he breaks up with her (again) and begins to have a fling with fellow Yale student Logan who comes from a similar family. Oh and she drops out of Yale.
Her love story with Logan is very chaotic so their song is 100% “Getaway Car” and their relationship is not taken well by his rich parents, which puts a lot of pressure on Rory and it seems like odds are against them after facing a lot of bumps on the road, very “Dancing with Our Hands Tied.” Rory straight up drops out of Yale and we know she’s blasting “Look What You Made Me Do” and she relates to “Delicate” while in her relationship with Logan.
Season 6: Folkore
She has hit rock bottom. She has to do community service, doesn’t speak to her mom and lives in her grandparents pool house. And Jess comes back to deliver the most powerful line in all the shows history:
“WHY DID YOU DROP OUT OF YALE”
Rory has really lost all of her identity without talking to her best friend (her mom) and not being in school which is a huge deal for her. I think she can not catch a break this season and it’s very “This is Me Trying”. Looking back all of the show she was put on a pedestal of being this perfect little school girl so it’s not shocking that the pressure and image got to her, this is clearly “Mirrorball”.Her relationship with Logan is still going strong and she needs to get away from the pressures of her family and society and falls into “The Lakes”. It is so crazy that her and Lorelai don’t have a relationship for a good 6 months because she doesn’t want to face the reality and it’s sadly giving “Exile”
Season 7: Evermore
Don’t worry, everything gets better. Everyone makes up and Rory is back at Yale and is graduating, we love that. Lory (Logan+Rory) is going strong until it doesn’t, at graduation he proposes to her and SHE DECLINES. Which leads me to my point.
Rory is very “Champagne Problems” no explanation needed. This breakup with Logan very unexpected ends us with “Happiness,” although very sad she’s probably 23 at this point and not completely far off that she doesn’t want to get married yet. After this, she goes on to work on Obama’s campaign, very girlboss. Her relationship with her mom and her family gets a lot better and I want to dedicate “Dorthea” to Lorelai, Paris, and Lane.
There’s no better way to end the show then with “Long Story Short” playing in the end credits.
