So you have the “Second Semester Blues”, what now…?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Being back at college for my first second semester has introduced me to something I never knew was possible: the “second-semester blues.” I’m not sure if it’s the transition from a relaxing winter break to a chaotic school semester or the stress of starting new classes, but one thing is for sure… the second semester is not for the weak of heart.

Between challenging classes, dealing with relationships, coming back from break, and the struggles of life many students find that their second semester feels significantly more exhausting. However, if this is not normal why is it an important point to bring up? Well, the answer is many things but in specific the effect that the “second-semester blues” can have on your physical health, mental health, and grades.

No matter how the “second-semester blues” may be affecting you, it is important to recognize that those feelings and challenges are normal. I promise you plenty of other students around campus are having similar feelings, myself included. So now the big question is, are there any ways to get rid of the “second-semester blues?” The big answer is yes. In this article, I would like to share my own ways I’ve been getting through second-semester struggles.

1. Going to Office hours, tutoring, and study groups

I can not stress this enough, if you are struggling in class or with your grades, office hours are one of most vital opportunities for help. I’ll be honest, during my first semester I did not go to office hours or tutoring nearly as much as I should have. But after attending my office hours this semester, I am a changed woman. (Trust me on this, even just once a week can make a difference.) Similarly, tutoring sessions can also be super helpful if you need more direct attention or instruction. If you’re struggling with finding a balanced study routine this semester, study groups can be a great option. Not only are you able to learn from each other, you’re also able to create and maintain a studying time.

2. Spending time with friends and maintaining special relationships

I’ve always found that when situations get more stressful, I end up unintentionally distancing myself from friends and just people in general. It’s very hard to push oneself out of their comfort zone especially when fighting other challenges. But in all truth, trying to push out of these boundaries and reach out to those you care about can be exceptionally rewarding. Your friends and those you care about are there for you. Spending time doing things you enjoy with people who you enjoy can help provide relief or at least take your mind off of stressful thoughts for a little while.

3. Enjoying the little things and making time for you

I know everyone’s probably heard this a million times, but self-care is so important in maintaining a healthy mind space and routine. College itself can demand a lot out of someone. There’s always another paper to write or quiz to study for. As students, we can often feel guilty for taking time to ourselves to do activities that don’t revolve around schoolwork. Well, I am here to tell you to try your hardest to push those thoughts out of your mind. Caring for yourself demands just as much as college does, and one of the things our minds need is relaxation. I understand that not everyone may have the time to go on a hike, read a novel, or play video games. But one thing we all have time for is enjoying the little things. I’m talking about those times when you’re debating whether you really deserve that coffee. You do. You work hard, so it is important that you let yourself know that you deserve those little moments and activities that make you happy. Watch that episode of tv you’ve been dying to catch up on, try out that new makeup looks you saw, and definitely eat that little treat you’ve been eyeing.
