Stephen LaPatrick Owens II, Future Mr. President?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Stephen LaPatrick Owens II, a Government and Pre-Law major, has a big dream that he’s working extremely hard to achieve. 21 year-old Owens is working to be President of our great country. No, seriously! This man has everything planned out and is ready to make big things happen. Plus, he can do a GREAT President Obama impersonation.

But that’s not the reason why he wants to be President. Besides being a great speaker, having a powerful voice and already looking like a prestigious figure, Owens cares. He cares about his family, friends and the well-being of our home: the United States of America.

Her Campus Texas: Why do you want to be President? Stephen Owens: To make this a country a better place for all citizens, and a more affordable economic environment for all of our hardworking citizens.

HCTX: What Steps Are You Taking To become President?SO: Volunteering for Wendy Davis’ Campaign, getting Letters of Recommendations to Harvard Law School, watching various Presidents succeed and make mistakes, and trying to make sure that every decision that I make is at the people’s best interest.

HCTX: Who are your favorite Presidents? SO:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt: FDR was a quick study. He possessed an insatiable curiosity, a boundless appetite for knowledge that combined with his capacity to absorb a striking range of facts through conversation. FDR possessed the charisma to connect with large numbers of the American people.

Barack Obama: Obama clearly is a visionary with a new approach to politics. He has proclaimed a strategy for moving the country forward that is vastly different from his predecessor’s, proposing shifts in our relationship with the rest of the world and in our relationships with one another. In his campaign, he built on the grassroots strategy that Howard Dan had started and threw in a lot of ideas of his own. As president he continues to provide clear views on the economic crisis, the Iraq War, health care reform, climate change and the U.S.’ role as a global citizen.

Abraham Lincoln: Lincoln demonstrated an ability to withstand adversity and to move forward in the face of frustration. Lincoln was able to acknowledge errors, learn from them, and then move. In this way, he established a culture of learning in his administration.

HCTX: Which Law School do you hope to attend?SO: Harvard Law School; it combines the remarkable scope of a world-class research institution with the intimacy and collegiality of the first-year section experience and hundreds of small seminars, reading groups, and independent writing and research opportunities. Harvard’s size is a great source of strength. It permits us to have a truly diverse student body drawn from across the nation and around the world. It also gives us a global alumni network, an unmatched course catalogue and library collection, and an active faculty engaged in teaching and research in dozens of different disciplines.
