Summer in Texas can be unbearable due to the unending heat and humidity. One way to escape the high temperatures is to take a break and see a movie. I have compiled a list of the movies and shows that I am anticipating most this season.Â
- I originally saw the film Cha Cha Real Smooth starring Cooper Raiff and Dakota Johnson, which is set to air on Apple TV on June 17, on TikTok. The story is about a Bar Mitzvah host (Raiff) befriending one of the party attendees (Johnson) and her daughter. Cha Cha Real Smooth‘s looks reminded me a little bit of an A24 type of film, pair that with the promise of Dakota Johnson, and I am hooked.Â
- While not technically a film, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the limited series, The Summer I Turned Pretty coming to Prime Video on June 17. Originally written by Jenny Han, the book has been adapted to bring the famous love triangle between Belly (played by Lola Tung) and two brothers Jeremiah (played by Gavin Casalengo) and Conrad (played by Christopher Briney) to life. This is the perfect summer watch as it is a coming-of-age romance set in a beach town– it doesn’t get much more idyllic than that.Â
- Based on the book by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing is coming to theaters on July 15. The movie stars Daisy Edgar Jones as she plays an elusive “marsh girl” in the 50s and 60s who is accused of murder and is forced to defend herself in front of a town that despises her. There is drama, romance, politics, and tension that is sure to leave viewers reeling. After Jone’s performance in Fresh this year, I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for her fans.
- Bodies Bodies Bodies is a Gen-Z take on a slasher movie starring Pete Davidson and Amandla Stenberg that is set to release on August 5. The film centers around a group of rich young friends who party at a remote mansion until all of a sudden things go awry. While I am typically not a fan of horror or slasher movies, I imagine with Pete Davidson on the cast list there is sure to be a fair balance of comedic relief to accompany the gore and suspension.Â
- Nearing the end of summer, Don’t Worry Darling, featuring two of my favorite celebrities Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, is set to release on September 23. Starring and directed by Olivia Wilde, the film is a psychological thriller comparable to the plot of The Truman Show that looks both intriguing and a little mysterious. Don’t Worry Darling will be Wilde’s first film since directing Booksmart in 2019, which is still one of my favorite movies. The plot combined with the cast and the promise of Wilde’s previous work has left me anxiously awaiting September.Â
