Architectural Digest is putting in the work to give us a look inside the homes of our favorite celebrities, answering our most pressing question: who has a green kitchen?Â
It all started in 2019 with David Harbour, who plays a deeply convincing Hopper on Stranger Things, wowing onlookers with a sleek green oven and stovetop. In the cover photo, he is seen perched casually on a dining table chair holding a sprig of what appears to be eucalyptus. My mind doesn’t track immediately to his welcoming demeanor or his affinity for wearing shoes indoors, I am drawn to the shiny green stove– classified somewhere between being hidden away and the absolute star of the show.Â
Next, in 2020 AD takes every Fifty Shades of Grey fan into the home of Dakota Johnson and the internet eats it up like it was their last meal. The article and accompanying video quickly went viral, centering around the awe of Johnson’s green kitchen and affinity for limes. A particular clip of the actress stating “I love limes. I love them so much. They’re great and I love them so much, and I like to present them like this in my house.”Â
Nearly a year later, the actress appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where she eventually revealed her most coveted secret: she hates limes. They were simply a prop used by the set design to accentuate the green kitchen itself. Not only is that hilarious, it further emphasizes the power that green kitchens have over me, the internet, and AD.Â
I mean, if the point isn’t clear enough, a stock photo of the paint swatch has a slide of its own, tucked between pictures of Johnson’s vintage light fixture and Gucci throw blanket. The swatch being Benjamin Moore Alligator Alley of course.Â
Most recently, AD outdid themselves with a profile on YouTube sensation Emma Chamberlain’s private LA residence in September.
Chamberlain’s fans, including me, were shocked at the juxtaposition of this amazingly curated home with her previous apartments. While she once filmed podcast episodes and challenge videos in a modern, minimalistic apartment with grays and concrete accents– her tastes have since evolved. Her new house has a museum-like feel, featuring artistic statement pieces and, of course, a green kitchen.Â
“The kitchen is bathed in soothing tones of green,” writer Mayer Rus reports. The cabinets, backsplash, and countertops all wear complimentary shade– accentuated by the grand skylight above the area. It is truly a beautiful sight.Â
The kitchen is a more modern contrast to the otherwise eclectic vibe of the house, but that’s what makes it unique amongst the sea of celebrity kitchens. I like that Chamberlain fully commits to the color choice– it stands out against Johnson and Harbour’s homes somewhat.Â
I think AD has done something really interesting by profiling various green kitchens over the years. They have revealed that even celebrities are capable of falling into trends– they’re just like us! Except, maybe in the sense that I won’t be buying a $4.3 million house when I turn 21. However, I’ll know I’ve made it when I can take a paintbrush dipped in green to my kitchen cabinets and find a home on someone else’s Pinterest board.
