Top 4 Best Friend Quartets

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Just as we were arriving at our spring break destinations, Spring Breakers arrived in NYC theaters, featuring two Disney stars, one ABC Family chick, and the director’s wife in tiny highlighter-colored bikinis carrying guns and reveling in spring break debauchery. The jury is still out about if it is so bad it’s secretly enjoyable. Instead of pondering that question during my flight back to ATX (that’s from NYC), I reminisced on my four favorite best friend quartets. Ones that didn’t involve drugs or James Franco in grillz.

The Stars: America Ferrera as Carmen, Amber Tamblyn as Tibby, Alexis Bledel as Lena, and Blake Lively as Bridget
Why We Love It: There’s something about four friends sending each other a magical pair of jeans along with heartfelt updates about their summer that really charms me. Especially with those whole coming-of-age plotlines we all know and love. And am I the only one who got teary eyed at the final rule of the pants? “Pants equal love. Love your sisters and love yourself.” Let us not forget the delicious man candy. My only grievance is that I most definitely double cuff my jeans and I have also worn a shirt tucked in with a belt, so by their standards, that makes me tacky. Psh, whatever. Haters stay pressed.

The Stars: Cynthia Nixon as Miranda, Kim Cattrall as Samantha, Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie, and Kristin Davis as Charlotte
Why We Love It: Let’s just face it, these four lived the lives that we all wish and hope for. They gave us a glimpse into that glamourous and sexy side of NYC (a side that we probably won’t see until we’re older and have enough money to pay for it) that we daydreamed about during fifth period algebra II. And how many times have you and three other friends determined who was the Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, or Samantha? Exactly.

The Stars: Shirley Knight/Kiersten Warren/Nicki Tschudi as Necie, Ellen Burstyn/Ashley Judd/Caitlin Wachs as Vivi Abbott, Fionnula Flanagan/Jacqueline McKenzie/Alyssa May Gold as Teensy, and Maggie Smith/Katy Selverstone/Mary Katherine Weiss as Caro
Why We Love It: Full disclosure, my three elementary school best friends and I made a a scrapbook with photos of us because I was so inspired by this movie. With its sunflowers (my fave flower) and its Louisiana charm, this movie gives definition to BFF. I mean the BFFs that drink together, win together, and the BFFs that spend a night in jail for riding in a car topless together, are te ones that grow old together. I can only hope that if my daughter writes an article villianizing me in TIME magazine, that my friends will make a Bloody Mary to console me and then kidnap her for a full “Yaya Mission of Mercy.”

The Stars: Gabby Hoffman/Demi Moore as Sam, Thora Birch/Melanie Griffith as Teeny, Ashleigh Aston Moore/Rita Wilson as Chrissy, and Christina Ricci/Rosie O’Donnell as Roberta
Why We Love It: Does anything sound more exciting than smoking cigs with a post-Vietnam Brendan Fraser? Didn’t think so. The adventures these four went on while raising money for their tree house upped the ante on summer fun. They had the perfect preteen, training bra (and for Roberta–taping her boobs) kind of summer. The seances, the bike rides, the Red Rover games, and of course, stealing the Wormers’ clothes while they were taking a skinny dip in the river. And of course one of the best scenes of the movie, when Sam gets all WWE on the not-even-cute punk who says “Too bad your mother is dead, then you would have someone who could teach you to act like a girl,” to Roberta.
