3 Baking Recipes to Try Over Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Toronto MU chapter.

I don’t know about you, but I love baking. It’s one of my favourite hobbies, and I enjoy sharing baked goods with my family and friends. I got better at baking with practice. The key is to follow good recipes as closely as you can in order to master them—then you can modify them as needed!

With the winter break in full swing, I’ve rounded up a selection of my top three recipes for you to try. After all, what better way to spend the holidays than warming up by a fire with some hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies after a baking session that leaves your home smelling like heaven? Let’s get baking!

1. Chewy Double Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

This cookie recipe from Minimalist Baker is absolutely phenomenal. I first learned about it when Swifties revealed that Taylor Swift used this very recipe when baking for her 1989 Secret Sessions.

I’ve baked this delicious treat countless times since then and it’s always a hit! I personally enjoy the peppermint essence in the dough and the crushed candy cane topping, but you can opt out of those ingredients and still make a solid double chocolate cookie.

2. Red Velvet Cupcakes

Laura in the Kitchen’s red velvet cupcakes are a classic. This recipe includes the quintessential cream cheese frosting that pairs so well with the red velvet flavour. What makes red velvet so special is that it has the decadence of chocolate and the lightness of vanilla. These scrumptious cupcakes are fantastic for your next holiday party or a quiet night in. Stream Red (Taylor’s Version) and bake red velvet cupcakes!

3. Brookie Bars

If you have strong sugar cravings, this one’s for you. The “brookie bar” is a combination of a cookie layer on top of a brownie layer, and it is oh-so-good! You can reverse the layers if you want, but this recipe is perfect as-is. You can learn how to make brookie bars thanks to this recipe by Baking with Josh and Ange. These are extra sweet, and they make for an excellent dessert! This is my go-to recipe for a homemade delight.

I hope you try these recipes this winter. Happy baking!
