There are a plethora of options on campus for a quick beverage between classes, but I’m here to give you the ultimate guide for where to go. Whether you want pastries or lattes, to study or chat, this is the guide for you.
My go-to coffee shop on campus, where I’m currently writing this article, is right around the corner from Metro. Page One provides an eclectic atmosphere with affordable and delicious food and drinks. Page One describes itself as a “chill haunt with a retro vibe,” and I couldn’t think of a better description myself. There’s plenty of seating, and the waits are never long. I haven’t been disappointed with a single thing off the menu, but my top recommendation would be the lavender hot chocolate. Despite being right around the corner from campus, Page One feels like a hidden gem.
Located across from the MAC, Blackbear Espresso hails a bit further than the other shops on this list, but trust me when I say it’s worth the walk. Stop by after your workout or the next hockey game and get rehydrated. Blackbear is a simple quaint little shop serving those who don’t want to stick to Gould St. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to write a paper while enjoying a finely brewed coffee, this is the place for you. Their rotating pastry selection allows me to treat myself to something new every time I stop by.
Across the street from Kerr Hall North, Cafe 808 is a rustic coffee shop and bar. The shop is nice but doesn’t stand out. If you’re passing by, I would say it’s worth checking out. The menu comprises of quintessential coffee shop classics and a few pastries and snacks. Still somewhat undiscovered, seats are usually available, but there tends to be a rush between classes that leaves it quite busy and packed.
When I think overrated, I think of Balzac’s Coffee Roasters. I don’t want to sound harsh, but I’ve never purchased something from here that I thought was worth my money. While not disappointing, there’s also a missing wow factor. The biggest issue with Balzac’s is the convenient location; since everyone knows it exists, everyone goes there. Hopefully, this list draws the crowds elsewhere since a less crowded Balzacs would rank much higher on this list.
While Starbucks will always be a classic and fan favourite, the SLC location might not be the ideal location. Often understaffed and insanely busy, you’re in for a long wait and will likely have to trek a few flights of stairs to find somewhere to sit. It does have a leg up on the 10 Dundas location, however, there isn’t much of a seating area. If you have the time and are craving pumpkin spice, this may be the perfect spot for you.
While Tims might be the most affordable coffee on campus, it’s also the last place I’d want to study. I recommend running in, if you’re short on cash, and taking your Timbits back to the quad. The proximity to Dundas square means most of the people eating here aren’t students, and the fast food nature of the establishment feels a bit pushy. The shop is usually busy, sticky and dim, leading to it ranking last on this list.
