Hair care has always been a fascinating thing to me. But, with the number of products out there, it can be overwhelming to understand which ones are really worth putting your energy in.Â
- Try to wash your hair less
You’ve probably already heard the classic tale of training your hair to last longer between washes. Although how often you need to shampoo your hair varies from person to person, there are ways to make it less greasy, which will help you not wash it so regularly.
I started washing my hair less often a couple of months ago, and the results have been very noticeable. Overall, my hair feels healthier, stronger and shinier now that the natural oils are not being stripped as often. If you’re looking into this tip, you could also try slicked-back hairstyles when your hair looks greasy or invest in a good dry shampoo. It will take some time and very greasy days, but I can confirm the results are worth it.Â
2. Protect your hair from the sun
Ensuring you protect your scalp and hair is super important during the summertime. Factors like the sun and chlorine can dry your hair, causing it to need extra protection.
Wearing protective hairstyles like braids with a hat to protect your scalp from the sun. You can add extra moisture to your hair wash routine to compensate for the humid air. If you are taking a swim, try a leave-in conditioner and make sure to use less heat.
In addition, don’t feel pressured to buy expensive hair care products from Sephora because there are plenty of great drugstore alternatives. Some of my favourites are the hair serum from Garnier Whole Blends and the Aveeno sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.
3. Try out different oils on your hair
I’ve been oiling my hair for quite some time now, and it has resulted in one of the best methods for hair care. Ensuring you massage your scalp with moisturizing oils can do wonders for your length and overall hair health.
One of my favourites has been The Ordinary serum for hair density which I apply the day before washing to let it sit for as long as possible. Rosemary oils have also been getting popular, especially on TikTok, because of their hair growth benefits. Some people have found the oil slightly too concentrated, so you can try rosemary water. This can be a cheap alternative that you can even make at home!
Regardless, using different hair oils on your scalp and using them weekly is a great way to keep your hair healthy in the dry, humid months.Â
4. Air dry your hair or use a microfibre towel
Grabbing your hairdryer after the shower can be tempting, but air drying makes a huge difference. Especially considering the amount of heat we use with curlers and straighteners, adding additional heat is unnecessary. Microfibre towels are another excellent method to keep your hair dry and healthy, especially if you have curly hair.Â
5. Try new heatless hairstylesÂ
Some of my favourite heatless hairstyles are overnight curls, braids, messy buns or even little space buns. Adding cute accessories, like ribbons or hair clips, is a great way to spice up your heatless hairstyles. You can buy these cute accessories from Amazon or even Shoppers Drug Mart!
My tip for looking for ribbons is to check out Dollarama, where you can find multiple different colours and lengths for ribbons. Youtube and TikTok are also great resources for new hairstyles and inspirations, or you can always try Pinterest to spice up your average ponytail.
