We are officially over one month into quarantine and it is now safe to say that we are all probably going a little crazy. Trying to keep a consistent routine and find something new and exciting to do everyday to stay busy is proving to be more of a challenge than anticipated.
So far, I have reorganized my room and my closet, discovered a new workout routine, finished my online classes, and been on more Zoom calls than I can even count. On top of that, I’ve been baking, cooking meals, and just doing anything I can to make the most of all this time on my hands. However, there’s always that time during the day where you don’t know what to do with yourself; you’ve exhausted all possible options and now you’re just wondering what to do next. Well there is only one rational decision at that point: Netflix.
This free time has given me the opportunity to find my favourite romantic comedies on Netflix, so I figured I would share them with you, hoping they cure some of your boredom.Â
These are four movies that have helped me survive quarantine:
- How to Lose a Guy in 10 days
-
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. The 2003 romantic comedy directed by Donald Petrie tells the story of advertising executive, Benjamin Barry and magazine writer Andie Anderson. The film follows Benjamin and Andie, who are both trying to be promoted and gain more respect at their respective jobs. Benjamin is trying to land a big campaign and Andie, a “how to” columnist for Composure Magazine, is trying to achieve creative freedom at her job, so she plans to write an article about how to lose a guy in 10 days.Â
Andie is approached by Benjamin at a bar and thinks she’s found the perfect subject for her article, but little does she know, in order for Benjamin to win his campaign, he needs a woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. Â
- Crazy, Stupid, Love
-
This romantic comedy is also close to the top of my list. The multiple story lines in this film all come together at the perfect time and the plot twist at the end is something you definitely don’t see coming. The movie keeps you intrigued the whole time and you will not get bored, I can assure you. The main theme that love always prevails leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling.Â
The main storyline focuses on Jacob and Cal, two men that met at a bar. Jacob wants to help Cal get his groove back after his wife cheated on him.Â
Plus, Jacob is played by Ryan Gosling and if that isn’t an incentive in itself then I don’t know what is. Â
- He’s Just Not That into You
-
This romantic comedy is sort of similar to Crazy, Stupid, Love, in the sense that there are multiple story lines all linked together. Some characters don’t get the happy ending they want, but there is the perfect balance of happy and sad. You get to see four different relationships, all with their own issues and hardships, and how the couples get through them.Â
This movie makes you root for certain characters to get their happy endings, which connects you to them. If you’re looking for more comedy than drama, than Crazy, Stupid, Love is the better option – but if you want more drama, then He’s Just Not That into You is a must-see.
- Burlesque
-
If you have not seen Burlesque you need to add it to your list right now. This is Christina Aguilera in her prime. There’s singing, dancing, and romance; so basically the perfect combination. Burlesque is the story of a girl named Ali who leaves her small hometown for the big city with a dream to take the stage. She can sing like no one has ever seen and she is just itching to the show the world. She struggles finding a job in the beginning but she never loses hope. This story is so uplifting and for those of you who watch Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. McSteamy makes an appearance in this movie, so more incentive to watch it, in my opinion.
Now is the time to watch every movie that’s been sitting in your list on Netflix. Sure, it’s not the ideal situation, given that in most circumstances being outside right now is forbidden, but use this time and do some research and find some super cool movies of your own. There are so many out there, and who knows, maybe your favourite is still out there somewhere.
