Meet Ayana Bowman! She is a Junior Politcal Science major with a minor in Spanish and International Studies!
What do you do?
“I am the Director of the Campus Activities Board and President of Delta Phi Epsilon!
When did you start doing it?
“I was the Assistant Director of Programming for CAB for the fall semester of this year and then transitioned into becoming the Director of CAB this February. I was elected President of Delta Phi Epsilon about a month ago!”
What sparked your interest?
“I applied to become the Assistant Director of Programming for CAB roughly one year ago. I had always had an interest in campus programming and felt that this would be the best place for me to help foster really awesome on campus programming as well as fostering my own personal development. I have loved being a part of CAB and the impact I have had on the student body! I initially chose to go through the recruitment process for Delta Phi Epsilon because of how open and inclusive they were throughout all of the initial interest meetings. From the top down Delta Phi Epsilon has encouraged us as sisters and as a colony to truly embrace who we are, and that is something I love about my sorority. I want to make sure that Delta Phi Epsilon continues to be a sorority filled with women who are unique and embrace who they are as well as embracing who their sisters are.”
How can someone get involved with this activity?
“CAB meets every Wednesday in UU 315/316 at 5:00 PM! Come hang out with us! Delta Phi Epsilon will be participating in formal and informal recruitment so feel free to reach out to me if you’re interested in joining our sisterhood!”
Do you have any tips for someone who wants to get involved?
“For CAB, creativity is key. You have to be willing to go out on a limb to really create unique and impactful programs and events.Delta Phi Epsilon focuses on the individual and finding out more about you. So, be yourself. I promise that no one will ever judge you for who you are, in fact we will encourage you to be as true to yourself as possible!”
How has this created connections for you personally/ How has it made you grow as a person?
“CAB has opened so many doors for me. I have met faculty and staff through this position. I have fostered friendships and relationships with other people who I would not normally get to me! I have grown incredibly as a person, student, and leader. Nothing will test your time management skills more than planning Tigerfest, while also writing your sororities charter, trying to stay on top of your school work, and maintaining some resemblance of a social life. Delta Phi Epsilon has exposed me to meet so many amazing women. They continue to inspire me each day in their drive and motivation to truly make a positive impact on this campus. These women leap at any opportunity to get involved on campus, whether it be in participating in other Greek events or service opportunities. I know that these women will leave Towson and have an incredible impact on the community.”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“In 5 years I will be about one year out from graduating law school. So if all goes well I will hopefully be practicing law somewhere! I will also be an active alumni of Towson University and Delta Phi Epsilon. Both have given me so many opportunities and will have shaped the woman I will now be. I want to be able to come back and help mentor and nurture other young women so that they too can be successful in whatever endeavors they choose to pursue. It is important that women lift each other up with them as they rise.”
What do you want people to take away from this interview?
“Do everything with purpose. If you ever doubt yourself, fake it until you make it. If you stop pushing and stretching yourself, you will stop growing as a person.I would not be where I am today if I did not repeat those three phrases in my head at least once a day. Every action you take and every word you speak can have massive positive impacts on those around you. Do something nice for your roommate, smile at a stranger, or thank a mentor for their kindness. These small acts will do wonders for your own personal development as well as adding positivity in the lives of those around you.
If you ever doubt that you deserve something, or feel like an imposter, fake it. I promise you deserve it and that you belong. If you still doubt yourself, keep faking. One day you’ll wake up and you won’t be faking anymore.Never become complacent. Always push yourself to be better. Learn a new language, read a book, join a new club! Force yourself to leave your comfort zone and experience new things. You will be an even better person for pushing yourself!
I by no means have my life figured out, nor do I have any right to tell anyone how to live their life. I grow every day, and I make mistakes every day. However, I promise that if you do any of the things I mentioned above, you will start to see positive changes in yourself and in those around you.”
Thank you Ayana, Hcxo!
