Given the amount of pumpkin spiced lattes being carried around campus and the emergence of fall boots and jackets, it is clear that fall has quickly approached, and I could not be happier. Fall is obviously every fashionable girl’s favorite season and the sole reason being that fall outfits are the most stylish. But we all know the struggle of waking up in the morning, looking into our closet, and not finding anything to wear. Caitlin Moran said it best, “When a woman says, ‘I have nothing to wear!’, what she really means is, ‘There’s nothing here for who I’m supposed to be today’”. So to make that morning process easier and faster this season, here are some fall essentials that can make your wardrobe fit who you want to be this fall.

  1. Leather Jacket

Jackets are key to any fall outfit for two reasons 1) warmth, obviously. 2) they can make an entire outfit due to their versatility. If you want an edgier look, jean jackets are the way to go and they can easily blur the lines between street wear and high end  elegance.

2. Denim Jacket

If you’re going for a more casual look, denim jackets can dress up an outfit while not looking too over-dressed.

3. Army/Camo Jacket

Army or camo jackets are in between the casualness of a denim jacket and a leather jacket’s bold essence. I especially love these jackets with black, tan, or  striped shirts or dresses.   4. Bomber

Bomber jackets are one of this fall’s latest trends and for good reason too. They help create an  effortless yet polished urban chic look.

5. Sweater Dress

When you wake up really late for class and don’t have enough time to create an outfit but still want to look good, a sweater dress is perfect for an elegant look. You can even match these up with  thigh high  boots or stilettos for a more formal occasion.

6. T-Shirt Dress

Fall is perfect for layers and a T-Shirt dress is the ideal base for a fall outfit that you can layer  up with a cardigan, jacket, and scarf or you can just keep it simple  by adding one more layer over the dress and adding some accessories.

7. Knit Cardigan

This one is self-explanatory. Knit cardigans make all the difference between a plain outfit and a fall outfit. From dresses to a simple shirt and jeans, knit cardigans can go with anything and everything. If you want to keep your look simple but not plain, knit cardigans are perfect.

8. Off the Shoulder Sweater

Off the shoulder sweaters are my personal favorite. They’re not boring but still relaxed and can  go with any type of pants whether it be distressed, boyfriend fit, ripped knee, etc.

9. Cable Knit Sweater

While cable knit sweaters aren’t as bold as some of the essentials mentioned previously, they  are still essential to the fall wardrobe. However, this is not to say that they can’t be dressed with a large scarf, or even a flannel underneath.

10. Black ripped knee jeans

There is a significant different between regular black jeans and black jeans ripped at the knees. Ripped knee jeans are edgier and go with everything and everything like a baggy sweater for a casual look or a cute top with a leather jacket for a  night out.

11. Suede or Corduroy Skirt

Although I’m not a fan of skirts in general, I love how suede or corduroy skirts look and it’s because of their texture. The skirts are the staple piece of the outfit and easily catches anyone’s attention.

12. Booties

Dress up your white shirt and blue jeans outfit with booties. Booties, like cardigans, can easily  make you look more put together even if you have three essays to write and two exams to study for.

13. Thigh High Boots

Although, I love all the items on this list, I’m most excited about thigh highs! Every fashion icon from JLo to Rihanna to Kim Kardashian has sported this look and they look amazing while doing so. There are so many different types of thigh highs like leather or suede, open or closed  toe, laced up, and many colors and each has a different effect on the outfit. For a show-stopping outfit, thigh highs are crucial.

14. Oversized Scarf

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “accessories are the exclamation point to an outfit” which is very much true and proven by oversized scarves. While scarves conveniently combat against New  England’s crisp autumn, they subtly add an aesthetically pleasing quality to a laid  back look.

15. Choker

We’ve seen them everywhere and of different styles and forms. Chokers  can complete a bold, rocker-style outfit or delicately decorate the look.

Having said all of this, it’s also important to note that these aren’t rules to always abide by, but merely suggestions and recommendations. What works for someone, may not work for you. Style is fluid, it doesn’t have an easy handbook one must absolutely follow, and that’s what makes it so fun.

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” — Gianni Versace
