With Spring Weekend coming up, I took the time to catch up with our famous Trinity ’11 graduate Austen Afridi, better known as Viceroy! He has been up to some pretty incredible stuff! Read on to find out, and be sure to check out his concert at Psi U this Saturday at 8pm.
Name: Austen Afridi aka Viceroy
Hometown: Half my life in East bay in SF and the other half in Easton, CT.
Major at Trinity: Sociology with a minor in Music.
Current City: San Francisco, CA
What do you miss most about Trinity?
My friends and quadding it up in the spring.
What is the most exciting part about coming back to Trinity?
Seeing friends and playing for my school, I haven’t been back since I graduated in 2011.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
I’d have to say the soundtrack from Weekend at Bernies, Tribe Called Quest, Daft Punk, and Treasure Fingers.
What are you working on right now?
A bunch of remixes for major labels, I’m doing one for the upcoming Maroon 5 single and I’m also working on more original material, too.
How did you come up with the name Viceroy and why?
I honestly do not have a great story; I think I heard it in a history class and thought it sounded cool.
What is your most exciting career moment?
I just finished up my European and Australian tours, that was awesome. I’m also headlining Webster Hall with RAC in June, which is pretty crazy.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years?
I just want to spread the whole poppy disco vibe I’ve been championing and have it be popular on a mainstream level.
What is your favorite song?
Tough question, I honestly can’t think of just one! I can think of remixes though. My favorite remixes of all time are “Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream (Treasure Fingers remix)” and “Sneaky Sound System – Big (Oliver Remix)”.
I wouldn’t date a girl if she listened to…
Country western! And I don’t mean Johnny Cash, I mean bullshit Toby Keith country music. Such a turn off.
