Catwalk to Long Walk? A Recap of NYFW 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

As many of you know, New York Fashion Week took place this past week in the fashion capital of the world (and my hometown!), Manhattan. However, most of you probably weren’t like me obsessively watching the YouTube videos wishing you were there. The lines presented will dictate the spring/summer trends for 2012. Crazy isn’t it? I am still trying to plan my upcoming fall wardrobe for 2011.  Nevertheless, we saw a wide range of styles: everything from the glamorous 1920’s to modern, bold dresses. With the hundreds of shows that took place this week, I picked a few of my favorite collections to share with you.

One of my absolute favorites was the Ralph Lauren line. The show transported me back into 1920s Great Gatsby era, which isn’t surprising because he designed the original costumes for the 1974 movie. The clothes oozed of luxury with dresses covered in sequins and feathers, in pale metallic hues. Definitely outfits we will see our favorite starlets rocking on the red carpet. I mean, what girl doesn’t want to be decked out in feathers and silk? Tory Burch who premiered her first runway show ever also was inspired by the 1920s with great modern wear pieces in fun bright colors. She was influenced by Pablo Picasso’s painting The Bathers and by the French seaside town of Deauville. She focused on long hemlines with fitted shapes, using bold stripes and polka dot fabric, which were overall very flattering and feminine. It was also of course very classic looking, in the typical Trinity-loving Troy Burch fashion. Monique Lhuillier mixed it up with bold colors and strong cutouts. She played with the juxtaposition of hard and soft fabrics, such as silk and leather. Her dresses are perfect for the daring girl. Philip Lim produced a great modern collection. He focused on pastels mixed with black and white, using simple and flattering cuts. Every single one of his pieces was extremely versatile and beautifully structured. Lim is on every up and coming designer list for obvious reasons. He has a real talent. Calvin Klein created a flirty feminine line.  The standouts of his collection were definitely the nude and crème colored, body skimming, knee length dresses, which every girl would feel beautiful in. Zach Posen, one of my all time favorite designers, really knows how to dress a woman and produced some show stopping gowns. His collection was full of volume in unusual ways. It was a real return to elegance with bright intense colors mixed with form fitting shapes creating a contemporary line. I would die to wear one of his pieces.

I also found a ton of cool new accessories throughout the week. For starters, Tory Burch had some amazing fringed bags and had her models wear men’s style shoes. Everyone at Trinity knows we ladies mastered that boat shoe look long ago! Marc Jacobs used a lot of tights and socks with heels–a look I’m sure we’ll see a lot of. He also used headscarves to create a bold look we haven’t seen in a while. Finally, Ralph Lauren’s collection was filled with fun hats and caps in the 1920s style, adding a whimsical touch to his dresses.
Although its so far in the future, I am definitely keeping these looks in mind when I start my spring shopping. I can’t wait to play with these trends! Which trends will you take catwalk to Long Walk?
