The crowd was roaring. The two competitors looked as though they were fighting to the death. This past night was livelier than most in Sophia Gordon Hall’s multi-purpose room, as Tufts Japanese Culture Club (JCC) hosted their first ever So You Think You Can Sumo? contest. For this awesome event, the club rented out two sumo-style fat suits (complete with an air inflator and oversized G-strings), and constructed a sumo stage out of gym floor mats and duct tape. The idea was simple, but the turnout was amazing. Contestants of all sizes and genders enthusiastically participated in this mock-sumo competition, both wrestling and cheering. Those who attended the event also had the opportunity to expand their knowledge if Japanese cuisine by learning how to make futomaki – the type of sushi that is, appropriately, commonly referred to as a “fat roll.”
