Two of my guy friends in the junior class are recently single.  By the looks of it, they seem to be enjoying themselves.  Who can blame them? Freshman girls still fit into their high school clothes and even wear heels out at night. And, let’s face it, as a girl, the idea of hooking up with an older boy is thrilling. The upperclassmen live off campus, are already in frats, and they usually have a car. It sounds like a win-win for everyone, right? Sure. I was a freshman girl once, and I had a blast. But the real issue is that some of the most self-empowered girls can still be awed by the simplest, minimalist efforts of our upperclassmen boys.
People are lazy and college boys are even lazier.  I will not say that freshman girls are easy, but they are definitely more easily impressed- which is great for guys because this means that seniors or juniors need to do almost nothing to charm them. I explained this phenomenon to these two friends of mine and they were somewhat offended, claiming, “It’s not like that! She’s pretty cool. I always try to hold the door for her.” Which I responded with, “Awesome. That’s great.” But I hesitated before asking if they might have taken them to dinner before. Partly because I was afraid of the answer, but mostly because I didn’t want to call them out. A simple opening of the door is nice and thoughtful, but even considering the heaviest of doors, is it really enough? It seems like it wasn’t always like this. Well, at least based on the stories I hear from my parents and of course the Keira Knightly movies I watch.  So who changed? Was it the XX or the XY? Next week I’ll explore this further.
