Off Campus Housing: What to Ask and How to Find Your Perfect Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Finding off campus housing at Tulane University should be considered a full-time job. From avoiding sketchy landlords who don’t give your money back to roach infested homes, finding the perfect place takes time and patience. Here are my best tips to ensure you get the best deal!

  1. If you are not already a member, join Tulane Classifieds, which is a Facebook group for housing, furniture sales, etc. I would also recommend your parents or guardians to join Tulane’s Parent Facebook groups as many parents post about their kids trying to find an extra roommate for a house.
  2. Do research on your landlord. Some are known to not give security deposits back. Ask around to find if your landlord is reliable! If possible, knock on the door and see if you can speak with the current residents.
  3. Getting a realtor is another option besides Facebook. They send you an updated search engine if any houses became available.
  4. Average rent can range from $500-$1000.
  5. I always asked if the property flooded during Katrina or has a history with flooding.
  6. Make sure the house has an alarm system!
  7. Ask if there have been any pest issues.
  8. See if the current residents are willing to sell you their furniture. If not, Tulane has Trash to Treasures in the fall before school starts, where you can buy used furniture and décor. I got an almost new air purifier for super cheap!
  9. Nice places typically go fast, but do not stress if you don’t find the perfect one right away. People are always looking for roommates.
  10. When touring homes, ask if you can take pictures so you can remember later when you are deciding between houses.

Good luck and happy house hunting!
