What is the Vagina Monologues?
The Vagina Monologues is a play written by Eve Ensler based on a series of interviews with women about their experiences and connections to womanhood. It is also a part of the larger V-Day movement to end violence against women across the globe.Â
When did you first get involved with the Vagina Monologues?
I’ve been involved with the Vagina Monologues at Tulane since my freshman year. I actually saw it for the first time as a prospective student and knew I wanted to get involved.
What have been some of the best experiences of being involved in the show?
My favorite part of being involved in the Vagina Monologues is spending time with the passionate, supportive, and inspiring women in the cast. I also found screaming “CUNT” onstage last year rather liberating.
What does being director of the show entail?
The director of the show collaborates with the two producers not only to put on an exciting and impactful show, but also to create a strong sense of support and community among the women involved. I am particularly excited and grateful to be working with Mwende Katwiwa and Charisse Poston as the producers this year!
Do you have any particular vision that is different than past shows?
We are still brainstorming about the possibilities of the show itself, but we are planning to bring a fresh energy to the Vagina Monologues and we are eager to hear the ideas and opinions of our cast. We are also hoping to cast a diverse group of women and reach as much of the Tulane community as possible with the Vagina Monologues message. Additionally, we are considering putting on a few events next semester leading up to the show as well as getting our cast involved in a local service project. Â
Who is eligible to be a part of the vagina monologues? How do they join?
Female students, faculty, and staff of Tulane are all eligible to be part of the show. Our auditions will take place on Sunday, November 24th from 9am-3pm in the Kendall Cram room of the LBC. Anyone interested should stop by anytime between 9 and 3 to read a provided piece from the show. No acting experience required!
We will also have positions available to assist in the production of the show. More details to come!
Finally, everyone is encouraged to come to the show! We will be performing the evenings of March 28th, 29th and 30th in Kendall Cram.
