Mardi Gras Survival Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us again…Mardi Gras! Whether you’ve already jumped right into the Carnival fun, or you’re saving up for this weekend, here’s all you need to know to (attempt to) make it to Zulu on Tuesday morning.

1.     Have a plan

Want to sleep in one day? Cool. Need to stock up on bagels? You’ll thank yourself later. Investing in a portable charger? Even better. Making the most of the weekend is all about having a plan. You don’t have to be everywhere all at once. Figure out your plan of attack and you’ll be way less stressed trying to get where you need to be.

2.     For the love of all that is holy, don’t forget to eat.

This is crucial. Eat breakfast, eat another breakfast, eat lunch, please don’t forget dinner. Throw some snacks in your fanny pack for when that $10 cheeseburger looks irresistible on the parade route. Eat regularly throughout the day and you’ll have enough energy to keep you going.

3.     Napping is an art form.

Not only is it an art form, but it may well very be your only shot at Tuesday morning festivities. Take quick cat naps between afternoon and night parades. Carve out a whole afternoon if you need to—after all you know what they say: it’s a marathon not a race.

4.     Hydrate!!!!

Water is your best friend. When you’re on the move for most of the weekend, it’s important to take good care of your body: drinking water will solve most all your problems (except finding a bathroom, or getting a ride home, or catching a shoe at Muses). Carry a water bottle around with you, keep it full, and radiate good health.

5.     Stick with your krewe.

We can’t all hitch a ride on a float, but you can’t make sure you’re safe and having fun by ensuring you and your friends stick together throughout the day. Download find my friends and link up every so often so everyone is on the same page. Catching beads is way better when you have to elbow your best friend in the side anyway!

Be smart, be safe, and throw on your high-tops—it’s time to dance in the streets!
