My Buku Experience: The 5 Raddest Performances

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

The insane storm that shut down Tulane and most of NOLA late Thursday night into Friday morning had most Buku-going festival lovers fearing a cancellation email, but as the overly-used performance saying proclaims, “The show must go on!” And that it did. Here are (in my opinion) the top 5 artists that literally slayed the stage.

1. Mija

Although I’ve never been a huge fan of intense Trap and EDM, these two killer gal DJ’s (shout out to strong females!) had the crowd dancing throughout the entire set.

2. Fetty Wap

Did someone say 1738? Fetty was the act I looked forward to the most coming into the weekend, and he did not disappoint. In all honesty, I was so excited that he sounded great live; there’s nothing worse than finding out your go-to car song (“679” anyone?) sounds less than pitch perfect in real life. Plus, there’s a special place in my heart for Fetty as both our homes are separated by only a few exists off the highway.

3. Future

Lovers of hardcore rap, Futures show is your haven.

4. Pretty Lights

A live band, a multitude of pretty lights, and a great crowd? This show had my senses in overdrive.

5. New Thousand (you haven’t heard about them, but you will.)

Without a doubt, these guys were my favorite act at Buku…and they weren’t a part of the lineup! Let me explain. My friends and I saw these talented musicians outside of Dat Dog on Frenchmen Street a few weeks ago, and absolutely loved them. Their sound is totally unique; with a violin, keyboard, electronic percussion pad and hand drums, it’s like nothing I’ve ever heard before.  Ironically, they ended up playing in between stages at Buku and I think I may have died and went to a strange trap/violin/hip-hop/rasta heaven. The violinist has amazing stage presence that had people passing by hooked, myself and friends included. I’m convinced they’re going to be famous soon.

Modern-Day Buddha.
