The One Hit Wonders Club Welcomes Rebecca Black

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Each year, there is always one person that is famous in the music industry for being “that one.” That one is made fun of constantly, yet their Youtube videos have millions of hits per day and they are continuously talked about for months. We all remember the glorious days of William Hung with his rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs,” the “Numa Numa” man, and now, it’s Rebecca Black and her song, “Friday.” My roommate showed me her music video the other day, and we both thought the song was a joke or parody of some sort. But lo and behold, this thirteen year-old is trying to seriously break into the music industry, first performing an acoustic version of her song and recently, revealed she is working on a new song. My only comment is…WHY REBECCA BLACK WHY!

Every ridiculous person gets their 15 minutes of fame, and then they’re done. They have their one hit wonders on Youtube, but after a few months, they are long forgotten. They don’t try to make more songs or videos because they understand that their current fame will only last as long as it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Yet Rebecca Black has not seemed to get the memo. No one will ever be able to take her seriously after the lyrics, “Kickin’ in the front seat/ Sittin’ in the back seat/ Gotta make my mind up/ Which seat can I take” and “Tomorrow is Saturday/ And Sunday comes afterwards.” She will always be thought of as the “Friday” singer, the girl who taught all of us the order of days in the week and the challenges of choosing a seat in the car.

These one hit wonders are entertaining for the pop culture world. I’ll admit it; I keep up with the random Youtube videos that within one week are posted on probably 100 of my Facebook friends’ walls. I’ll watch them a few times as a break from my economics homework.  But then these one hit wonders go away, and I soon forget about them. Rebecca Black can be counted in this category, and I do not anticipate seeing or hearing any more of her after the “It’s Fridayyy, Fridayyy, Gotta get down on Fridayyy” hype goes down.  Because soon enough, a new, even funnier song will be released, perhaps about the months of the year, that will make Rebecca Black disappear. So, Rebecca Black, welcome to the club I like to call, The One Hit Wonders Club. Meetings are once in a lifetime.
