October is one of my favorite months of the year. The weather is a little chillier (meaning it’s not 90 degrees in New Orleans anymore), the trees transform into multitudes of breathtaking colors, and, of course, it’s the month of Halloween. I’m adjusted to my new semester of classes and have an exciting, yet busy schedule. Yet
the month of October has another important significance: Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Beginning in 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has grown to a global phenomenon. Around the world, there are walks, races, and several other events throughout the entire month of October in which people can participate and raise money for research, care, and treatment. Companies ranging from Clinique and Avon to New Balance, and even Cartier, have invented products where a portion, or all, of the proceeds will be donated to a breast cancer charity. Many offices around the country also have a specified day of the month where they encourage their employees to wear pink clothing or accessories in support of breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also a way for celebrities and sports franchises to show their support. For all you Her Campus football fans (DA BEARS!), you may have noticed on Sunday the on-field pink ribbon, as well as the pink cleats, gloves, and towels used by NFL players. The coaches, referees, and cheerleaders were also sporting their pink apparel. Throughout the month of October, the NFL will continue to do so with their campaign, “A Crucial Catch.” The NFL has partnered with the American Cancer Society, and throughout the month they will auction off game- worn jerseys and other memorabilia in support of breast cancer. Fans are also given the opportunity to pledge $1 for every point their favorite team scores in a game.
Celebrities are using their fame to benefit research. Designer and breast cancer survivor Betsey Johnson will be holding in-store parties and selling products such as t-shirts that say, “I’m a Survivor” and socks that say, “We Can Do It” with proceeds to benefit Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. Jennifer Aniston has designed a t-shirt in conjunction with Ford’s Warriors in Pink where all proceeds benefit the cause. The Ellen Degeneres Show is collecting donations online all month, which will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
Let’s make this October a memorable one. There are endless ways to get involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, whether you are buying Essie’s “Raise Awareness” chic, pink nail polish, pledging money for your favorite football team, or participating in a breast cancer walk. Every dollar counts, so get involved and let’s put an end to breast cancer so that someday, all women will get the opportunity to enjoy October, breast cancer free.
