The Weekly Recap: Sandy, Star Wars, & Elections, oh my!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Hurricane Sandy: Just when we thought Hurricane season was over, Hurricane Sandy breaks way in the Caribbean heading north, except this time, not for New Orleans, but to the east coast! After the powerful storm, the Northeast was left ravaged. Power outages leave about 4.6 million in the dark, and the death count has totaled nearly 75, with 30 alone in New York City. New Jersey seems to have gotten hit the worst is suffering from damage all over it’s coastline. Seaside Heights, made famous by MTV’s Jersey Shore lost much of it’s boardwalk and amusements to Sandy and can expect a lot of rebuilding in the aftermath. Most schools in the Northeast region have been closed and will be for the remainder of the week. The New York Stock Exchange, which reopened on Wednesday, was closed for the first time due to a weather related incident since 1888. Relief projects have sprung up in the surrounding areas and around the country. The American Red Cross association has reached out and is accepting donations on their website if anyone out there is interested in helping out. Look like New Orleans isn’t the only place with hurrications.

Star Wars: Just when we thought the Star Wars saga was over (along with Hurricane season!) Disney bought the rights and signed on for a seventh, eighth, and ninth installment to begin production as early as 2015. George Lucas sold his company to Disney for a measly 4.05 billion dollars. A spokesperson for Lucasfilm assured E! News that the concept for the next trilogy would be a completely new storyline. While fans of the Star Wars saga were not too pleased to hear about this, there is an upside–it’s probably a safe assumption that Disney World and Disneyland will be adding some new rides to their parks within the next few years.

Election: With election day less than a week away, America is getting ready to decide on who will be in the Oval Office the next four years. There is still time to send in absentee ballots, so make sure yours are filled out and are in the mail! It remains to be seen whether or not Sandy’s destruction will effect the polls in any way. Will some states have an extended period to vote? Will the President and Mitt Romney’s response to the storm play a pivotal role in their chances? That’s up to all of us to decide. So make your final decisions and get out and vote! It’s your last chance to vote for a president for four years, and probably your last chance to vote as a college student. Take advantage of this opportunity and make a difference. Every vote counts!Â
