Poutine, one of the greatest Canadian dishes ever to be invented, has started to stray from its original
composition of gravy, cheese curds and bacon, to a whole new range of delicious add-ons. Now,
thankfully, poutine has expanded to being a menu item throughout the day, which is a luxury we have
that we didn’t even know we needed. Here are three of some of the best poutine dishes in Edmonton
that’ll be sure to make your taste buds go crazy.
First up is the Poutine Matinale from Café Bicyclette, located near Campus Saint-Jean. Made up of a
combination of your standard cheese curds and gravy with a twist of a poached egg and steak, this
poutine will keep you in a food coma all day long. I barely got to eat the entire poutine, since everyone
else at my table suddenly attacked my plate with their forks. So let this be a learning lesson: if you
order this poutine, keep it away from everyone else!
Another highly-recommended poutine dish is basically ANY breakfast poutine dish at OEB Breakfast Co.
My all-time favourite is the Chasing Chickens poutine, with the Chunky Lobster Scramble being a close
second. The Chunky Lobster Scramble is served with lobster, shrimp and shallots, which are available in
limited quantities everyday, but very much worth the hassle of getting up extra early and fighting the lineups
in order to give this tasty breakfast a try. Seriously, props to OEB for inventing a breakfast meal that we
excite ourselves over the night before we go to eat.
Everything’s better in three’s, so my third pick for a rising star in the poutinerie community
(on this list; don’t worry, there’ll be more lists!) is La Poutine. Serving vegetarian, vegan and
gluten-free dishes, this small-but-loved poutinerie knows exactly how to attract any palate
whether simple or evolved. Try the Big Mack poutine, The P.B. poutine (which are both exactly
what you think it is), The Hot Wing poutine for a spicy buffalo kick, or even go basic and try The
Quebecoise poutine, no one’s judging!
As all good things must come to an end at some point, so must today’s edition about the best poutine
