In my opinion, ear piercings are my favourite type of body modification. They’re super subtle while adding a sense of uniqueness to one’s personality, but, of course, this depends on the types of earrings you choose to decorate your ear with. 15 ear piercings later, I think it’s safe to say I’ve definitely picked up a thing or two about the process.

First, the initial research about the desired type of earring is crucial. Sure, being spontaneous and walking into a piercing parlour on a whim is thrilling, but the risks associated with the wrong choice of earring metal or ear location can be damaging. Second, Once you’ve gotten to the piercing parlour, take a quick look around and make sure it’s kept clean. It’s good to even take the time to look up the parlour’s reviews on Google because the last thing you want to do is go to a place that doesn’t clean their equipment properly. Third, If you have sensitive ears, it’s best to get pierced with real silver or gold studs in order to avoid a chance of an ear infection or allergic reaction. Fourth, never ever get your ears pierced with a gun, always go with the needle!

Become familiar with the possible risks (and advantages, which also exist, don’t worry!) associated with the type of piercing. For example, the helix and the tragus, if not pierced properly, can cause paralysis and deafness, respectively. BUT, don’t let this discourage you from getting those piercings if you really want them, just make sure to check all the right tools are used and do your research beforehand! On the brighter side, the Daith piercing can alleviate migraines, which is super helpful if you experience those regularly.

After the designated healing period for the chosen piercing, you can change your earrings to something that suits your style a lot more! Switching up the standard studs for spiral studs, beaded mini hoops, bar studs, and flower studs is always a good idea! That’s what I love so much about ear piercings, we all begin with similar studs when getting pierced, but eventually, we get to decorate them in a way that is representative of our own style, making each of us unique and special!
