Long flowing hair is beautiful, that’s for sure, but short hair is also a great look! Just look at Emma Watson in her super short hair, and Anne Hathaway as she embraces her role in Les Miserables by with a daring pixie cut. So after waffling and chickening out for years, I finally did it. Yep, I cut off pretty much all of my hair. What once fell half way down my back no longer touches my chin, and I love it!
The thought of cutting off your locks is really intimidating to a lot of girls, so how do you decide if going short is right for you?
1. Hair Type:
As always, hair type is a big factor in the type of cut you should get. When researching the style and cut, try to find models or celebrities that have the same hair type you do. Then when you actually go into the salon, make sure you talk to your stylist. Tell your stylist the look you are going for and your hair type, but make sure you tell the stylist you are willing to try something different than what you just proposed. Be open minded because short hair can be hard to do and you ultimately want what will actually look good, not just what is in style.
2. Up-Keep:
If you like to roll out of bed and run a brush through your hair, then going short may not be for you. Short hair isn’t really hard to style (granted, you have some idea of how to handle your hair), but it’s definitely more noticeable when you don’t take care of it. With hair this short, you won’t be able to put it in a quick ponytail or a trendy high bun when you don’t have time. What this means is that you’ll often need to buy some products, such as mousse, to treat and style your hair. Don’t worry, you don’t need the forty dollar ones at the salon, the cheaper ones will work, too.
3. A Real Salon:
I’m not going to say I haven’t gone to Best Cuts or had my friend with a high school cosmetology license dye my hair in her basement because that would be a lie. While I was able to avoid more expensive salons with my longer hair, this thrifty business with a short hairstyle just won’t cut it. You must, and I can’t stress how important it is, go to an actual salon. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive place, but it should more than Best Cuts. Do your research. Read reviews on salons, look for salons in areas of the city that would be familiar with the style you want and also look into the stylist. When you find a salon and call to make an appointment, mention the style you want and ask for a stylist with experience. You can also give them a price range you are looking to stay within. When you actually go in, make sure to bring a picture or two that you like.
4. Femininity:
I’m not saying you will look like a boy with short hair, but wearing a baseball hat around or a beanie may not be the best idea anymore. If you are worried that short hair will detract from your feminine nature, don’t be. For starters, most of the classic beauties have rocked the super short hair at some point in time. From Audrey Hepburn to Goldie Hawn to Emma Watson, short hair can actually show off your face in more feminine way.
So there you have it, the four-one-one on the short hair trend!
