The Silver Screen Comes to Hyde Park

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Chicago chapter.

Hyde Park was long overdue for a movie theater, which only made the January 18 opening of Harper Theater that much more exciting! Yes, re-opening. The theater was first issued a building permit in 1913 and shaped the character of the neighborhood during the twenties, but it wasn’t known as the Hyde Park Theater until the eighties before it became The Meridian in the nineties prior to closing. After more than a decade, Hyde Park has its movie theater back with style.

A glow from the vertical Hollywood glamour theater sign reading ‘Harper’ and box office greet you with a smile. The lobby is polished and neat with seating blending the styles of a traditional movie theater and a coffee shop. Check out the menu to satisfy your buttered popcorn craving, buy your favorite candy for the show and indulge in a pastry, from Medici’s no less. Pastries without coffee would be a crime, so be sure to also check out the café menu, which includes coffee drinks including specialties such an espresso and lattes.

The theater itself has four screens with heavy cushioned red leather chairs, with each cinema providing a small, but cozy, viewing experience. The movie showings are the newest films you can catch, including The Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, The Life of Pi and Hyde Park on Hudson. The student ticket price is only seven dollars and a matinee is six dollars. Regular adult admission is eight dollars and seniors and child tickets are six dollars. Purchasing tickets online is an option provided at their website.

For a unique, inexpensive and convenient night out, stop by the Harper Theater!
