Dorm rooms are dark, confined spaces that some would even compare to prison cells. This makes it absolutely crucial that you get decorations that will brighten things up. A little greenery is the perfect way to add some color and positivity to your room. Plants provide oxygen which helps to purify the air, making them the perfect accessory to keep your tiny living space fresh. It can be overwhelming trying to find a plant that you feel confident you can maintain, so here is a list of the five best plants for dorm rooms to make your search a little easier.
1. Lucky Bamboo
Lucky bamboo is the perfect plant for those of us that don’t have the time to attend to a plant but would love the benefits. The striking bamboo plant only needs to be watered about once a week and will thrive in a small pot that will fit nicely in your dorm room. Lucky bamboo is one of my favorite plants, not only because of its simplicity, and beauty, but also the feng shui it brings to your room. Lucky bamboo is known to enhance the flow of positive energy in your living space. Some even say that lucky bamboo brings wealth and prosperity to a household, and I’m sure every college student would love a little bit of wealth and prosperity. A study from the American Horticultural Therapy Association found that students who own a lucky bamboo can focus better on studying for exams. This plant clearly has some great academic benefits so if you are trying to be an academic weapon this semester, definitely get a lucky Bamboo plant.
2. ZZ plant
ZZ plants are the perfect plant for a dorm room because they thrive in low light, so they will grow in dorms that, inevitably don’t have the best lighting. ZZ plants have a rhizome, which is basically a long stem that runs nutrients to the plant, that can store nutrients for the plant for weeks at a time. This allows the ZZ plant to flourish with little to no care. It has a beautiful look, making it the perfect house plant. It grows at a slow to moderate rate, and it can be as small as one stem or be large and full to give your room an earthy vibe. The ZZ plant is known as the fortune plant due to its ability to promote growth in your life. Good fortune in academics, social life, and even mental health are all crucial in college.
3. Snake plant
Snake plants are great for dorm rooms because they are one of the hardest plants to kill, so if you’re anything like me and are incredibly forgetful, the Snake plant might be the perfect addition to your dorm. Unlike most other plants, the snake plant can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen overnight, so it will purify the stuffy air in your dorm room 24/7. Snake plants also bring purity to your living space by guarding against evil. This plant is great if you are trying to cleanse your space and get rid of the toxicity that you will inevitably encounter at college.
4. Aloe vera
Aloe Vera makes a great addition to dorm rooms. Aloe only requires watering about once every two weeks to flourish, and sometimes needs to be placed in direct sunlight. Aloe vera gel, which comes from inside the leaves, can be used as a moisturizing gel for your skin. If you live somewhere sunny and are used to getting sun-kissed skin, aloe vera gel is a great way to keep your skin moisturized and prevent pealing. Although it is slightly harder to maintain, I would recommend getting an aloe vera plant not only because of these properties but also because it’s known to help cleanse your living space of negative energy.
5. Peace Lily
The last plant on this list is the peace lily, which requires more maintenance, but has a beautiful glowy look that will brighten up your dorm. Peace lilies need to be placed in indirect light and require watering about once a week to maintain consistently moist soil. Taking care of a peace lily is slightly more difficult, but it’s definitely worth it. The peace lily is known to convert negative energy into positive energy. The leaves are supposed to bring you wealth and the flowers bring good luck, which are both things every college student needs. If you are willing to put in a little extra work, the peace lily will be an amazing addition to your dorm.
