Transitioning into college can be a very difficult adjustment. Even after being on campus for a few weeks, there are certain aspects of your life that are completely different from the normalcies of home. To make the shift easier, here are some pieces of advice that every freshman should hear:

Get involved

Fortunately, UConn has so many different activities and clubs that you’re guaranteed to find one to spark your interest. Getting involved on campus will not only build up your resume, but also begin your personal network that will assist you in building relationships and potentially kick starting connections for life after college. Plus, getting involved is a great way to make friends.

It’s totally okay to be alone

As a freshman, I always felt bad when I had to eat meals on  my own because I thought it wasn’t socially acceptable, but I was very, very wrong. Eating dinner by yourself is okay, especially when you have a busy schedule, or even when your friends have a busy schedule. Sometimes you are going to be on your own, but now is a great to learn how to be independent.  If you’re still worried about it, you can always bring your laptop and do work or fool around on Facebook while you eat.

Take time for yourself

Saying no to going to that frat party so to stay in and have a spa night with yourself is absolutely fine. Taking time for yourself is so important. Your friends will understand if you need a night alone and there will be more frat parties to attend. Your happiness and health is more important than anyone else’s.

Do not make getting into a relationship a priority

Even if your family and friends are pestering you about finding “the one” in college, that does not mean it should be a priority. Focus on yourself. This is the time to be open to self-discovery. Find out who you are as an individual instead of trying to find yourself through someone else. Love will come eventually, but for right now live in the moment and have fun. Focus on building a network of friends.

Go to sporting events

Whether you’re an avid sports fan or would rather sit in your dorm with a book, make sure to get out and see a game. UConn’s school spirit is ridiculous. Every sporting event will have a lively crowd to cheer on our fellow Huskies. So paint your face and cheer your head off!  Check out the UConn Athletics website if you want to get a schedule of the games to plan in advance.

Missing home is normal

Transitioning into the college lifestyle is a difficult adjustment, and it is inevitable to question whether or not you made the right decision. Missing the day to day routine of home is to be expected, but don’t let that hinder your college experience. Surround yourself with good people who make this feel like it is a second home.

Welcome to UConn and best of luck!
