Name: Courtney Curtis
Year: 4th Semester Sophomore
Major: Communications
When I met with Courtney she definitely resembled the women in Vogue. Very sophisticated and fashion savvy. She sees fashion in a different perspective other than the typical view, and that sets her apart. She is also a blogger and plans to pursue a career as a fashion editor at a magazine in the future.
It was a breezy, cloudy day but that didn’t stop her from fashionably strutting the sidewalks of UConn. She was wearing a cardigan, which is Jason Wu by Target, H&M tank top, Victa watch, rings are from Tiffany’s, the cobalt jeans are Blank Jeans, glasses are Tom Ford, and the bag is Balenciaga.
How do you describe your personal style?
I feel like my style changes pretty much day to day. It really depends on the mood I’m trying to emulate. Some days it’s completely punk and I have all black, studs and leather all over. And then some days it’s preppy.
What is your definition of fashion?
I think fashion to people who don’t really understand it, is like a way to express their personality. I think people say that about people who are into fashion. But to me it’s a way to show who you are without really saying anything. It’s like a way to show the world how you present yourself. It’s a way to say a lot more than just; oh I’m preppy or gothic. I’m put together so I’m organized.
Do you have a style icon you embody in your clothing?
I think people would usually say Audrey Hepburn or the classic IT Girls. But I really look for street style people, bloggers, and there’s this website called Lookbook.nu and its just girls who photograph their outfits daily. It is a community to vote and see what other people are wearing in the entire world. I look at bloggers for inspiration rather than style icons.
Do you dress for comfort or do you like to take risks with your clothes?
I don’t really dress for comfort. I’m always wearing heels. I think if you’re comfortable that’s great and it might be a benefit to fashionable clothing. But if certain pieces look great together and it’s most of the structured, and if it’s uncomfortable then you are probably doing something right.
What inspires your outfits?
I think definitely my mood and the weather are the two major influences. But I’m also in to the fashion shows and follow trends. And I’m always a head start on buying what is huge during the season.
Courtney is definitely going after her dreams to be a fashion editor. She plans to go to New York City after she graduates. She even may have some connections in the fashion industry. She got a foot in by attending Teen Vogue’s Fashion University for a two-day-long seminar hearing editors and designer share their knowledge and experiences in the fashion industry. Courtney was able to talk to most of them and introduce herself and make an impression on them. Hopefully in the future we’ll see her work in a fashion publication!
