Everyone’s Thinking About It: 7 Reasons Why You Should Shave Your Head

I think we’ve all had a moment of frustration with our hair where we wished we just didn’t have any at all. It’s crossed almost every person’s mind whether it be a passing thought or a serious consideration. I was one of the handful of girls that actually committed to the idea. In April 2022, my bestie and I took a pair of clippers and impulsively cut every curl off. What happened to be a fun, little stunt turned into an intensive self-love journey. I don’t regret a single thing and I’m here to tell you why you should follow in my footsteps.

1. New look, new you

Everyone gets bored sometimes and tries to switch up their look. Dyeing your hair is fun, but shaving it is even more so! Grab a friend and go to town, it doesn’t have to be perfect! Not to mention, our hair holds memories, and cutting it can be a way to release energy and start new beginnings.

2. No more damaged hair!

Perhaps you’re a victim of chronic bleaching, box dye, or just a bad haircut that leaves your hair fried and dried. Cutting all that dead weight gives you the opportunity to start over and grow healthy, shiny hair. This is especially true for my curly-haired girlies! My curls were sad and stringy and now they’re growing back bouncier than ever!

3. Conversation Starter

I can’t tell you how many times people have approached me to tell me they love my hair, and all I had to respond with is “what hair?”. This interaction just created an opening to an endless conversation. People will ask you questions and even open up to you about how they’ve thought about going down the same path. This gives you the chance to meet like-minded people and make friends!

4. Wigs! wigs! wigs!

If you ever get tired of the short hair look, you can always Buy. A. Wig. There are cheap ones, expensive ones, bangs, no bangs, lace front, glue-less — literally any kind you could want. You can mix it and change it whenever you feel like it — a pink bob on Monday to blonde bangs on Thursday. It’s so much fun, and you can even match it to a special occasion!

5. Less work & more money

How much time do you spend in the day styling your hair? Exactly! Now there’s one less thing to worry about. You don’t have to spend money on products and you save time in the morning getting ready. No worries about running late!

6. Standing OUt

A bald head isn’t enough for you? Then dye it a funky design! The one thing I was excited about with my buzzcut was the chance to paint pink flames on my bleached head. There are so many different ideas and colors — the possibilities are never-ending! Now, none of your friends will ever be able to lose you in a crowd.

7. Learn to love yourself

This is one of the most important reasons in my personal opinion. As women, we are told what’s feminine and what isn’t, and what we’re supposed to do to be considered “beautiful.” Having long hair is one of the many points on the checklist that society gives us. Once you cut it all off, you’ll feel less feminine than others almost immediately. This is where the self-love journey really begins. You learn that you’re not just your hair; you have other features that are just as beautiful, if not even more. You’ll learn to love new things about yourself that you didn’t even realize were there. It’s like you’re really seeing yourself for the first time.

Shaving my head was one of the most thrilling things I’ve ever done, but also the scariest. I didn’t know how people would perceive me now after being known for so long as the girl with the long, curly hair. You might be wondering if I ever miss my hair, and my answer will always be “of course.” It’s natural to miss who you used to be, but I’m happy to see who I’m becoming. I get asked why I cut it so often, and all I can say is “because I wanted to,” and that’s all the reason you really need.
