How I Met Your Mother is one of the most popular sitcoms of all time and for very good reason. It has nine great seasons that make you want to laugh, cry, and smile simultaneously. It blends a great deal of humor with heartfelt, relatable characters and moments that have made it what it is known as today: a great group of friends who hang out with one another and experience their ups and downs, or per se, legendary moments in the busy city of New York.
However, with all the great times the show provides, it also has a bit of wisdom and inspiring quotes that you may miss. I think main character Ted Mosby had many moments of inspiring wisdom that we — and when I say we, I’m including myself — can all try to learn from.
“Nothing good happens after 2 a.m. When 2 a.m. rolls around, just go home and go to sleep.”
Ted’s rule that nothing good happens after 2 a.m. is the best reminder that if I’m ever up around that time, I should go to bed. Whether you’re on your phone texting or whatever you find yourself doing at that hour, at that point, it may be a good idea to make a good choice and just go to bed. You’ll thank yourself the next day, and your sleep schedule might thank you too.
“You will be shocked kids, when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways with people forever. That’s why, when you find someone you want to keep around, you do something about it.”Â
People come and go, especially in college. It’s a time of growth and development. I’ve often found myself in situations where I’ve met people and sometimes never spoke to or saw them again. People have come and gone, and theoretically, if there’s someone who matters, you should at least try.
“The great moments of your life won’t necessarily be the things you do; they’ll also be the things that happen to you.”
We can often find ourselves in unexpected moments that create a great range of memories of laughter, fun, excitement, and possibly more. Humans can only do so much and create so many “great moments,” but sometimes it’s the unexpected moments that we find ourselves in that really make it worth it.
“Never underestimate the power of destiny. Because when you least expect it, the littlest thing can cause a ripple effect that changes your life.”
I would like to think there’s such a thing as destiny. Ted Mosby’s quote about not underestimating the power of destiny reminds us that the world has its own things happening, pushing us to believe in the idea of the butterfly effect in our own lives. Hypothetically, you never know what will happen, giving us just a little hope to keep going.
Conclusion
Ted Mosby had a good character progression, as we’ve seen his character go through many arcs, dates, and possibly “the one.” Throughout the show, he went from a hopeful romantic in the big city of NYC to a man ready to leave it all behind, give up on it, and possibly move to Chicago. Ted was an architect with a love life that seemed to go through many different loopholes and interesting situations.
Through those 9 great seasons of watching Ted and all the other characters on the sitcom develop, we got great bits of wisdom here and there that some of us may be able to apply to our own lives or just in general. Barney may have shown us how to make every night a legendary night, but Ted may have taught us a little more about life itself.
