Hunting for Halloween: Costume Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Halloween is just around the corner and finding a good costume can be tricky and expensive.  Here are a few ideas to put together your own costume for less this year!

First things first, take a look through your closet.  Look for old dance costumes, themed apparel, statement pieces or clothing in bright colors or prints.

For example, a leopard print dress paired with a set of ears, bought inexpensively, can create a quick costume.  Or, for another option, a plaid skirt and a button down shirt can create a schoolgirl costume.  Look for opportunities to reuse old outfits such as neon colors as well as trends that have come and gone. Your mother or grandmother’s closet may even hold some gems for creating a time period specific outfit!

Here are a few other ideas for costumes this year to put together using clothes you already own and others that can be purchased inexpensively!

  1. Angel, Butterfly or Fairy:  Have a cute dress you have not worn in a while?  If it is white or cream pair it with a set of wings to become an angel.  Add some glitter and soft makeup and you have an instant costume!  Another option for a more brightly colored dress is to add wings and be a fairy or butterfly.  Use your makeup skills wisely in order to further portray your Halloween vision.  False eyelashes and fun eye shadow can make all the difference!
  1. Favorite TV Show Character:  Whether it is Meredith from Grey’s Anatomy, Rachel Berry from Glee or Zooey Deschanels character Jess on Fox’s “New Girl,” it is easy to put together an outfit to channel your favorite actor or actress on Halloween.  Watch episodes and look for their style and copy from items you have in your own closet!  For example, Rachel Berry’s style, quirky and academic, can easily be replicated.
  1. Animal Costume:  Dressing up as an animal can be a fun and a quick costume.  Becoming a lion, leopard, bear, cat, mouse, or dog is easy!  Dress in the color that is associated with that animal and then add a set of ears and maybe a tail and you are set to go.  If you are adventurous add whiskers to your face with eyeliner!

Have a fun and safe Halloween collegiettes!
