It’s Okay to Quit Sometimes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Usually, when someone goes through something difficult, advice often revolves around sticking with it, not giving up and persevering. People try to push you forward, which is great and well-intentioned, but it often seems like the only option is to continue, when sometimes you really, really can’t.

But I, along with plenty of other people, are here to tell you that it’s okay to quit sometimes. Author Aubrey De Graf once said, “don’t cling to a mistake just because you spent a long time making it.”

However, this doesn’t mean that when you get a bad test score you should just drop out of college. Instead, if you hate your major, or you hate your job, or maybe you even hate your boyfriend, it’s time for change.

It’s really tough to jump into an unpredictable situation. But, if you never quit anything, you’ll get stuck in a rut.

Truthfully, sometimes things don’t get better, they don’t get easier and they aren’t worth sticking with ’til the end. So it may be best for you to redirect your energy to something more productive and finding ways to change for the better.

The overall message is not that you should give up on everything you fail at the first time, but rather to tell you that not everything will work out just because you continue to put hard work into it. Sometimes, you just need to be able to tell when to throw in the towel.

So if you feel stuck, or something feels like it’s not meant to be and you’re looking for a sign to make a change, here’s your sign: go after your happiness!
