Long Distance? No Worries: How to Deal with Distance

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Whether it’s a plane ride away from your best friend, or a few hours from your significant other, distance seems to be a problem almost every collegiette experiences. Her Campus is here to provide some ways to alleviate the ever-annoying woes of long distance relationships!

1. Send each other random (thoughtful) texts!
Simply sending a text – “thinking of you” or “good luck on your anatomy exam!” goes a long way when you’re a long time away, especially because you’re not always in check of each other’s schedule or workload.

2. Try new things!
When my boyfriend moved back home, an hour distance from my home and two hours away from UConn, I had to find an affordable way to visit him. Cue Metro-North. Cue panic ensuing because I couldn’t quite figure out public transportation without my parents on the phone guiding me through (I guess I was sheltered.) After overcoming my train fears, the train became a fun and convenient way to visit him!

3. Plan weekend trips!
Last winter, a friend and I road tripped to another friend’s school in Boston. The trip was really the best way to make the distance seem not so far and included meeting school friends, checking out her dorm, scoping out the area surrounding the Boston Commons – the perfect winter weekend!

Keep in mind that distance is only as far as you make it feel – staying in touch and in tune with each other is the best way to make a relationship or friendship withstand the distance without feeling the tensions of virtual Skype dates or rushed phone calls. While traveling can be costly in time and money, making the attempt to visit each other will ease that distance and make you both feel connected and in-sync.
