Naked and Not-Afraid: Demi Lovato’s Inspiring Photoshoot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, “In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life.” Demi Lovato is one of these people. Having been open about her struggles with eating disorders, Lovato is finally learning to love the skin she’s in and is embracing her body in a nude, makeup-free, and unretouched photoshoot with Vanity Fair to promote both body positivity and also her new album “Confident” which debuts October 16th.

Lovato’s great-grandfather died the day before the shoot, inspiring her to be bold. In her Vanity Fair interview Lovato says, “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short… How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying, ‘I don’t give a f**k and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free… I said, ‘What if we do a photoshoot where it’s totally raw? Super-sexy, but no makeup, no fancy lighting, no retouching, and no clothing. Let’s do it here, let’s do it now.’”

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight Lovato says, “I had a lot of people that I looked up to when I was younger that weren’t the best role models, so for me, it’s a responsibility to hold myself accountable and to be that inspiration for young girls and even people who are older than me.”

With Lovato’s brave and body-positive attitude, there’s no doubt that she is a great role model for people of all ages. Don’t miss her new album “Confident,” which comes out on October 16th.
