One thing that I strongly believe in is the idea that you should never show up to someone’s house empty handed. I also believe that having a little bit (or a lot) of a dessert full of chocolate every once in a while is a very good thing. Thankfully, Caitlin Lombardi, one of my very best friends and a fellow collegiette from the University of Maryland, introduced me to the best dessert ever if you love sharing and you love chocolate even more.
Girls, meet Oreo Balls. They’re super easy to make and you can have them ready (almost) sooner than you can get your friends together to eat them. They taste a little bit like fudge dipped in chocolate, and they’re about the size of golf balls. Sounds good, right?
Here’s what you need from the grocery store:
One package of Oreos
One package of cream cheese
One bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
Here’s what you need at home:
Two plastic bags
One big bowl
One large spoon
Two pans
Two pots (one small and one bigger)
A freezer
A mixer
A stove
Ready to go? Here’s how you make them:
Take all of the Oreos out of the package and put them in one of the plastic bags. Put this bag inside of the second one to prevent a huge mess.
Put the bag on the floor and take out all the aggression you’ve been holding in since your last bad date. No, really…smash/stomp on/crush the bag of Oreos until all you have is cookie dust.
Dump the crushed Oreos in the bowl and mix in cream cheese until you can roll the cookie into balls without them falling apart.
Roll enough balls to use of all of your Oreo mixture. I usually end up with two medium-sized pans’ worth of balls if I use a whole package of cookies.
Stick the pans in the freezer for about 30 minutes, or until the balls are frozen.
After the balls are frozen, pour the chocolate chips in the smaller pot and fill the larger pot about 1/3 of the way with water. Put the smaller pot inside of the larger one and bring the water to a boil. This will melt your chocolate without burning it to the bottom of the pot.
Using the spoon, move each Oreo Ball into the pot of melted chocolate and make sure that it is completely covered before putting it back on the pan.
Put the chocolate-covered balls into the freezer and wait another 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is hard.
Remove from the freezer, serve, and enjoy!
This recipe is great for busy collegiettes like you because it’s easy, delicious, and sure to make you the hit of the party! Just be prepared for some ball-related jokes (really funny, guys…) and for lots of requests to make more soon!
