Things to Do in Connecticut During Christmas Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Although Thanksgiving hasn’t even passed yet, it is still a great idea to get prepared for Christmas time in New England as we all know that it’s the best time of the year. Connecticut’s cozy towns and snow-covered trees are the perfect backdrops for celebrating Christmas 2019. So, if you live in or close to Connecticut, here are a few of the best activities you can try that will boost your holiday spirit.

Find the Perfect Christmas Tree

If you live in Connecticut and go to a tree farm to pick out your tree, you will often see several license plates from neighboring states. With that being said, it’s pretty clear that CT has some of the best trees to offer. Many of the tree farms offer fresh hot cocoa, wreaths to purchase, and sleigh rides. Check out Jones Family Farm in Shelton, Allen Hill Farm in Brooklyn, or Maple Hollow Farm in New Hartford to grab your ideal tree.

Go to a Drive-Through Lights Display Park

Connecticut offers dozens of quality venues where you can see amazing Christmas lights, however the drive-through light displays are some of the best you can come across. Two great spots that have hundreds of families returning each year are the Fantasy of Lights at Lighthouse Park in New Haven, and Holiday Light Fantasia at Goodwin Park in Hartford. The drives are between one and two miles long and include well-known Christmas characters and designs with over 100 displays. Plus, the parks have tons of Christmas snacks waiting for you after the drive is over!

Run or Walk a Christmas 5k

Getting together with your town or a neighboring town to participate in a 5k is a great way to spread the joy that Christmas brings, and it’s also the perfect activity to help you stay fit from all of the Christmas cookies coming your way. Trumbull’s annual Jingle Bell Run, Stratford’s Frosty Forest Trail 5k, and Norwich’s WinterFest 5k all have a great vibe. All of their proceeds go to charities, they offer relays for children, unique and decorated paths for their 5ks, and of course, Christmas time food and drinks for the participants.

Shop Til’ You Drop

Although Connecticut is one of the smallest states in the country, it’s shopping possibilities are endless. Between the high-end outdoor shopping outlets and the cozy malls that are decorated for the holidays, you can get all of your Christmas shopping done in an instant. Some of the hot spots for the best gifts this year are the Clinton Crossing Outlets, the Danbury Fair Mall, and the Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor. Happy shopping!

Attend a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Many towns will hold Christmas tree lighting ceremonies in early December to kick off the holiday season, so do your research to see if there’s one approaching near you. One of the best-rated ceremonies occurs each year in Fairfield, the heart of Fairfield County. They have a choir sing carols, and Santa even makes an appearance too.

I hope these activities get you pumped for our upcoming Christmas season, and don’t forget that there are so many other holiday events that happen in both Connecticut and New England as a whole. Have a fun, safe, and healthy holiday season everyone!
