Fall is my favorite time of year. I love everything about it – the cooler weather, the changing colorsand all the autumn activities! There’s something for every collegiette to do, either alone, with a friend or with your new campus cutie.
For the adventurous, fall is the perfect time to go for walks through the woods. The changing colors can make even the most well-trodden path look like a newly discovered trail. There are lots of areas to go hiking on and near campus! Safety tips: Make sure to dress warmly when the weather starts getting cold and remember that it gets dark earlier every day!
One of the biggest highlights of fall is Halloween. Rainy days and other attacks of boredom are the perfect times for grabbing some friends and raiding some closets. Save money on costumes by swapping items, or go all out and take a trip to the store to put together that perfect look! This can also be a good time to pack up your summer clothes and make room for your new winter pieces.
If you’re feeling like a kid, or just looking for a fall flavored date idea, try apple and pumpkin picking at a local farm! There are so many in Storrs, such as Wrights Orchard, and the best part is that apple picking is extremely inexpensive! Most farms also sell their own baked goods and have hot chocolate and apple cider to warm you up when it starts getting cold. Also, keep an eye out for corn mazes, hay rides and fall festivals!
After you’ve gotten yourself a pumpkin (you can always buy one from Big Y!), you can spend another day carving, decorating, and baking it! Have a carving contest amongst friends, or just try to make your pumpkin look like your roommate. Save the seeds and bake them – all the dorms have kitchens in them available for use. Share them with the floor or save them for yourself. If you’re really adventurous you can caramelize some of your apples for another tasty fall treat!
Don’t forget to regularly check SUBOG’s website and the UConn events calendar for other fall themed activities. Some upcoming events include the October 22nd trip to Salem, 13 Haunted houses and the October 27th Cardboard Canoe Race!
