Award Show Season: The Wrap Up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Award show season has officially come to a close and here is the scoop on what went down at each show, just in case you missed any of them!

The Golden Globes

The Golden Globe awards kicked the award season off right, with beautiful fashion and wonderful hosts Tina Fey and Amy Pohler. The two were hilarious hosts, but in Vanity Fair magaine’s new March issue, Taylor Swift expressed her negative feelings towards the joke they make about her dating life. Honoring both Television and Film, awards went to the well-deserving casts of Homeland, for best Drama, and new show Girls, which took home the award for Best Comedy Series.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards

The SAG Awards are the actors’ favorite award show because they get to honor one another for their achievements- which also makes winning an award extra meaningful. This award show always start out with classic “I am an Actor” speeches from several actors and actresses in the audience. This year, big winners included Ben Affleck for Best Director, Anne Hathaway (her first SAG award!) for Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress, and Argo for Best Film.

The Grammys

Hosted by LL Cool J, the Grammys were a night of major performances and big wins. Taylor Swift, Elton John, The Black Keys, Rihanna, and others gave amazing performances throughout the evening. Taylor opened the show with her song “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together”, and cracked a joke at her ex Harry Styles (faking a British accent during her song). Taking home Grammys this year were Adele (of course), Fun, The Black Keys, Frank Ocean, Carrie Underwood, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and more.

There was also a dress code this year for the stars, who were told by CBS not to wear anything too revealing. This was a surprise to everyone, including the stars themselves. Violators of the dress code included Katy Perry, who was showing a little too much cleavage, Jennifer Lopez, with a daring slit in her dress, and Kelly Rowland whose dress had a bunch of cut-outs. The stars said it was because they got their gowns before the rule was made. Beyonce and Jay Z sat front row, but ‘Kimye’ didn’t show (bummer!).

The Oscars

The Oscars were all about music in film this year, and included special performances by Katherine Zeta Jones from Chicago and Jennifer Hudson from Dream Girls. The cast of Les Miserables also sang together, and brought everyone to tears with their powerful performance. Since the show was dedicated to music from movies, they used the classic music from Jaws to cut people off when their speeches ran too long. Big winners of the night included Argo for best film, Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress (Les Mis), and Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress (Silver Linings Playbook), beating the 9-year-old nominee Quvenzhane Wallis.

Jennifer Lawrence was definitely the stand out of the night, with her fall up the stairs on the way to receiving her Oscar (She still got a standing ovation from the crowd!). What went through the 22-year-old’s mind when she fell? “A bad word that starts with an F!”, she said in a press conference interview after the show.
