Houseplants. “You mean the frumpy ferns my grandma has in her house?” Ummmm, no. I’m talking about the super beautiful plants of all types that you, yes YOU, should have in your dorm or apartment. Why should you own houseplants, you ask? Here are five reasons to purchase a little green friend asap.
1. Plants make breathing easier.
Okay, so not literally. They don’t breathe for you, they’re not a ventilator. But plants go through a process known as photosynthesis, and during this process plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Essentially, this gives you more fresh air to breathe! Without plants in your abode, your air might feel heavy, like your head is under the covers. Kick that heavy air feeling to the curb with a couple plants!
2. Plants release water.
Right now you’re thinking, “Great. Humidity is the LAST thing I want in my apartment. Have you never heard of hair frizz?” While I feel you on the frizzy hair part, what you should know is that a little bit of humidity is actually beneficial! Without some humidity in your home, you’re liable to suffer from dry skin and dry coughs. Yuck. Avoid racking up the medical bills and the costs of 1000+ lotion bottles by purchasing a few house plants!
3. Plants improve safety.
Yup, you heard me right. Plants make your home safer. Houses these days are full of potentially harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. Most of these harsh toxins are found in rugs, grocery bags and furniture. I’m not trying to scare you, despite what it seems. But great news! Plants alone can remove 87% of these toxins from the air of your apartment.
4. Plants make you healthy.
A study done at Kansas State University suggests that patients with plants in their recovery room recover faster from surgery than patients without plants in their recovery room. The study also reported that the patients with plants had lower heart rates, took less medication and had lower blood pressure. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather water a plant once a week than be popping pain pills 24/7!
5. Plants help you focus.
As noted in numerous studies, being around plants causes improved concentration, memory and productivity. In fact, it can increase by as much as 20%! Maybe you study in your dorm/apartment and need help finding your focus. Or maybe you don’t study at home, but could use some help remembering all the details of your favorite netflix shows. The solution to these issues is simple. Buy a plant!
Finally, if I haven’t persuaded you to go out a get a house plant by now, just remember that houseplants are possibly the cutest decoration a home can have. Buy some super cute pots or DIY an adorable home for your plant. Honestly, having houseplants just makes it look like you have your stuff together.
