Campus Cutie: Emma Gilliland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Let me introduce you to the number one Lana Del Rey fan in Iowa City. This week’s Campus Cutie is Emma Gilliland or “Little Emma,” as her friends affectionately call her. She is a sophomore here at the University of Iowa studying Business Analytics and Information Systems and calls St. Charles, Illinois home.

Why did you choose to go to Iowa? I visited a lot of schools, some small and some big, but when I visited Iowa I felt the most at home. I really liked that it was a Big 10 school, but the campus wasn’t too spread out. What’s the best part about living Iowa City?I really love the variety of restaurants and activities that are right across the street from the campus. Favorite place to study? The business building library or the lounges in Hillcrest residence hall.

If we were to see you walking around campus with your headphones in, what are you listening to? I love EDM music, like ODESZA and Flume. I also really love Lana Del Rey. I could really be listening to anything depending on my mood. What’s your favorite guilty pleasure? Chipotle. I have it way too much.

What are three words your friends would use to describe you? I just asked my roommate, and she said, “Funny, anxious, and little.”

What’s the best concert you’ve attended?

I went to see Lana Del Rey this past May and loved it. It was amazing to see my favorite artist live and hear all of my favorite songs.

If you had a spirit animal, what would it be?

Chihuahua

If you could erase your memory somehow and re-watch any TV show, what would you pick?

I watch too many shows to just pick one! Either Grey’s Anatomy, Orange is the New Black or One Tree Hill.

Madeline is a sophomore at the University of Iowa majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication and pursuing a certificate in Critical Cultural Competence. When she's not spending countless hours studying you can find her at the local thrift store, texting her friends about her bad luck or at home dancing in the mirror to old Panic! at The Disco songs.
